While I recognize what happened was not nice, the onus falls squarely on the US Administration. You shouldn't expect Israel (this is how it is spelled) to cry over a spy ship that was aiding and abetting its Egyptian enemies during war time. Did they blow the heck out of the Liberty? Yes they did. Did they apologize? No. Nor would I, if you were helping my enemies. Should the US have complained at the time? Of course! If they didn't, it's Israel's fault? Not hardly. Fault lies squarely on the shoulders of those who sent the Liberty into harm's way improperly protected. BTW: This happened 42 years ago. What good comes from bringing it up at this time? At this point, many Israelis are viewing the US as more enemy than friend. How many Israelis (or Jews) are actively killing US forces around the globe? None! Arabs? Muslims? Don't make me laugh. Want to lose Haifa as a port of call for the fleet? Israeli intelligence sources? How about making an enemy of a nuclear power? Do these sound like good ideas?
As far as I am concerned Israel can go straight to H*** in a hand basket. What I said did not have anything to do with what Israel did. My concern is that the United States did not do, nor will it do, what any country would do for it's military. Do you think that Israel would have let it go as did the U.S.? Of course not. Read my lips....Our politicians felt that to protect Israel was a better action to take than to acknowledge that over THIRTY MEN were killed for no reason.
My concern is that this country has a track record of cowardice. The U.S.S. Pueblo, S.S. Mayaquez (Three Marines left on Koh Tang Island) who ultimately were captured by Kymer Rouge and beheaded) Lt Col Higgins murdered while attached to U.N.
The, I'll say it again, track record sucks. If it happened once, once is too much.
If it would have been one of my Marines left on Koh Tang Island I would have been courtsmartialed because the pilot of the Helo would have been shot if he refused to go back for my men.
I know, from my experience as a Platoon Commander of a Recon Platoon in Vietnam, that there was no way that they were going to drop my troops miles away from the right HLZ and leave them. I had a 12 Gauge shotgun that was going to be used unless he lifted off and took my troops to the correct LZ. Someone has to have some balls. Semper Fidelis. Blackcoat.
