RE: http://www.military.com/military-fitness/fitness-test-p...0-fitness-questions: I am a 49 y/old disabled veteran with arthritis problems. I am being scheduled for a total knee replacement. I can do no lower leg exercises and I do not have access to a swimming pool, besides changing my diet, how or what type of cardio exercises do you suggest?
7) Is it better to do cardio before or after lifting weights?
I like to warm up with cardio for about 10 minutes / stretch then lift weights, but then I go for my run or swim or bike for 30-40 minutes after lifting. I find that if I lift after running or other cardio, I do not have the power I had than if I lifted first. It is really up to you, though. To burn more calories, I would lift first, run second. - Stew
Wait, what? "It's really up to you"? Did I seriously just read that?
OK folks, NEVER do cardio before lifting (a few minutes to warm up like Stew mentioned is perfectly fine and not what I'm discussing). You'll burn out your muscle glycogen stores and end up with no real energy to commit to your weight workout, leading to faster exhaustion and minimal gains. You might as well completely skip the weight workout at that point for the good it won't be doing you.
Hello Stew, I am an over weight out of shape 50 year old with bad knees, my doctor says I have osteoathoritus. My question is what can I do to lose my belly fat and increase my burning without further hurting my knees? I tried biking hard for an hour three times a week, and it did not seem to help, I was in better shape but i did not lose any weight. I can swim at the YMCA, as i have membership, but it is hard to get motivated. Thanks
