RE: http://www.military.com/forums/0,15240,182342,00.html
My Opine. Having lived on NAS Agana Guam for 3 years, and enjoyed the Guam Hospitality and the environment, I would say I qualify to offer an opine. 1. The island, 28/8 miles, is indeed small. The various villages at the sea bays, would suffer from a massive influx of population. The Agana harbor, along with the Nuclear Harbors, all require continuous maintenance to keep silting under control. 2. There are a lot of old ordnance on this island. In the early 60s the DOD EOD teams believed it would take years of screening just to locate and destroy the WW2 ordnance. This will be a problem, when the dozers take on the hinterland jungles. 3. Airstrips left over from WW 2 are also a problem. Concrete, steel, old ordnance, all are items of concern. These can be moved and re used but the cost.... 4. Simple inter cultural aspects. The Guamanians are used to having population fluxes and flows. This island is indeed strategic, and the Guamanians need to be properly recognized in the US Congress. A state hood resolution was introduced some time back and failed. Finally, if you or yours get to live there, visit the Northern side of the Island. Wear your sandals, as the beaches are terrific. I have many fond memories and pics of my family standing in knee deep, placid, warm water. A fine place to raise youngins. end |
