Apart from vengeance, what was the motive for assassinating this guy? Is it worth it to us to violate the sovereignty of Pakistan, to humiliate and enrage its population, just to kill a cornered criminal? How did this get us any closer toward ending the war on terrorism?

Vengeance for what?

The guy was, at best "suspected" of involvement in a plot that never had much grounding in reality to begin with.

He was arrested at the behest of the Americans questioned and, failing any credible evidence against him, (pretty remarkable given a Pakistani predilection for acting as travel agent for Cuban vacations) released.

He later 'walked away' from an extradition hearing requested by Britain - which had remarkable success convicting all the 'other' liquid bomb plotters. That's where the notion of 'guilt' comes in. He reappeared in this news item.

The Brits are currently investigating whether their intelligence operations may have been involved in this man's death. His family are established in England and it is believed communications surveillance may have been in effect. No charges against this man have been brought in an English court, he was wanted for questioning.

Another dead potential terrorist. He had an Islamic look about him.

In the words of my favoite daily show correspondant, **** these *******. If they support a regime that hinders peoples ability to seek knowledge(acid attacks on young girls and bombing schools) and better themselves(killing villagers that support modern roads to boost commerce) they deserve to die. Call me ignorant if you like, but most of the rest of the world has realized that religion is something to study and believe. NOT INDISCRIMINATELY KILL FOR!! And if the paki's are going to continue to let them operate unchecked in their country, thank whatever god you believe in that somebody has the balls to stand up and fight.

You described the injustice of this assassination very well. The "vengeance", to which I referred, is the kind of blind rage and senseless anger that has been frequently expressed by men like WolfRecon85, among many others.

Secretary of Defense Gates has recently written that America cannot kill its way to victory. I hope that he has more success under the Obama Administration, than he has had while serving under President Bush.

Spoken like a true Obama apologist and he hasn't even assumed office yet...
The Pakistani government has and is proving itself to be a rogue government, witness the tactic support of those fanatical groups that just attacked India...
India may just solve the problem of Pakistan for the world, by attacking them for the attack launched on their civilian populace in their economic center of Mumbai...
Respectfully, SUNLINER81

It's hard to relate to a country that claims sovereignty while not providing good governance. Saddam had this problem, Afghanistan hosting OBL also, and Pakistan, sponsoring terrorist schools (madrasses) providing safe havens for the same. The latest is the Mumbai attacks killing 165 people. Faizal Sheikh and his brother Muzammil Sheikh, arrested being suspect having links with the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, accused of several terror attacks in India, including the July 11 Mumbai blasts. Pakistan courts allowing all suspects to walk free in that one after denying extridition to India. Nah, it's not a sovereign nation, it is a lawless, anything goes, hatred for the kafir, playground for the most radical bastarrds of the world.

A little humor on how they treat suspect Rashid Rauf.

to all,

Pakistan has no control of the border regions to the northwest or just south of Afghanistan and need our direct intervention on the Afghani side of the border to assist them in eliminating the movement of troops and supplies to the Taliban or Al quaida forces.

But we need to reach out to the tribes and inprove their life style and show them the benefit of being cooperative with us. This is an archaic system that has to be educated in the new ways before you will have any results.

Pakistan is flirting with territorial destruction by screwing around with India. India has cleaned their clock more than three or four times in the last forty years and they still get belligerent. The so called rogue groups help them express their rage with India.

We will risk anything to ensure the safety of our troops in combat. so screw the Pakistani and if it goes south, we just have another target to light up. So goes the world and unfortunately you have to do some explosive things to get change. They won't do it on their own.
