The old one is, but this one would in fact cover the entire cost, although only at state universities [a cost cutting measure not in the original S. 22 proposal]. I do not see why that is a bad thing at all. The original GI Bill did cover the entire cost and did not "help", and the nation did very well out of it.

It is. It's called Tuition Assistance. (Not to mention CLEP's, DANTES, SMART/SOCNAV, Navy College Fund/Army College Fund, and a variety of Officer Programs)

i am sorry to say that the military is set up for single soldiers as far as education goes. i was going to go into that program green to gold but could not afford it.i was married with 2 kids. i could have if i didnt care about my family. i took classes while i was in using tuition assistance, but it was limited too because my family grew to 6. as an e6 in the army i was on food stamps and that is pathetic. then i did not contribute in veap for the same reasons. YALL TALK AS IF IT IS A BENEFIT, BUT ITS NOT A BENEFIT IF ITS NOT FREE. SO THOSE WITH NO FAMILY HAVE MORE OPPORTUNITY AND MONEY TO GO TO SCHOOL.

BOTTOM LINE IT WOULD IMPROVE THE MILITARY TO BE EDUCATED, I WAS THERE FOR THE MILITARY,BUT IT WASNT THERE FOR ME. I HAD NO PLANS TO GET OUT OF THE MILITARY AND WOULDNT EVEN AFTER RECEIVING A DEGREE, BUT I KNEW ONE DAY I WOULD RETIRE AND IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE SOMETHING TO FALL BACK ON. AS FAR AS THE GI BILL YOU REALLY WOULDNT NEED MUCH IF YOU GOT YOUR ASSOCIATES DEGREE OUT OF THE WAY WHILE ACTIVE. I GOT 122 SEMESTER HOURS WHILE IN.

This new GI Bill would be great for every veteran that MAY be leaving the service. I do not think that this upgraded GI Bill will have any effect on career minded service members. As we all know, there are many ways to get college paid for while in uniform.

I see this upgraded GI Bill as the least our country can do for those of us that have served in uniform. The idea of congress saying that it will cost too much money is absurd. As for John Mccain not supporting the enhanced GI Bill, I'd really like to hear his reasoning. As with many others in this forum, I spent my time in Iraq, and I dontt hink the only folks that should come away with a gain is KBR, Haliburton and the other groups making a windfall there.

The ORIG GI Bill paid a hell of a lot more to the WWII Vets (in equivalent $ today) allowing America to grow the most prosperous middle class in History, more poor, blacks and white, became educated, bought homes, paid taxes and were able to produce the greatest jump in living standards unmatched so far in the WORLD.

McCain gets a Military pension, VA disability, a Senate Salary, a wife's $200 MILLION Trust, 8 homes and COLLECTS $28,000 in SOCIAL SECURITY . . . no wonder he can't relate/support a G.I. Bill to helps those not lucky enough to come back, dump an old wife and get the sailors dream of marrying a woman with Millions, THAT OWNS A BEER Distribution Empire . . .

What we (Bush, McCain) value is not providing returned veterans an opportunity to get an education after their sacrifices (volunteers or not) because it may encourage people to get out of the military. People value serving a true cause. They (Bush, McCain) ignore the fact that it may just attract a boatload of new recruits and spark a faltering economy.

I'm just wondering why should only post 9/11 veterans be entitled to this? Why not all Veterans? A disability has forced me to stop working for awhile but I only have 20 months left on my GI Bill...perfect time to go back to school and get an education that I was not able to get during my working years. I've already started school..but it's going to be crunch time at the end.
