Uh, pardon me, but wouldn't you have to know where the IED was first?!?!?! They don't exactly put them out in the open. Another solution in search of a problem.

Yeah, that takes all the whiz-bang out of it. You can blow the damned thing with a grenade if ya know where it's at. At first I thought it was some super duper detection unit. |

It is amazing how quickly the contractors can develop a system that was not speced by the Pentagon. How come they can't do that for the stuff we order?

Grandjester, why do you always have to know the nitties on each and every subject? Believe me they are able to locate most all types of IED's with this equipment. Then the laser finishes the task. Sometimes it's not the best idea to post all the details on hear as has been done in the past. My own personal opinion would be that most of the stories be censored before they ever go out. But, that's me. I believe in secrecy all the way.

It should be stated, that a laser needs to "see" an IED. No direct optical path - no effect. To counter this expensive high tech weapon, it's enough to dig in the IED, or shelter it with stones.
Till lasers become an effective weapon against material, it will take some more development. But this laser would be a very nasty and devastating device against troops already now, and imho such it will be used. It's basically a modern times flamethrower. For countering IED's I would suggest a radio-controlled disposable flying device with a charge, that could be steered via a video-link to the IED in question, and fire the charge there. This would be inexpensive and feasible on current state of the art. |

A good idea who's time has come. I think the Air Force Security Forces could use this sort of technology for protection of its resourse. Less collateral damage if a threat needs to be taken out rather than using a Mk-19, M-203 or even rifle fire.

Having this technology is one thing, how you use it is another. Using it on human beings would tick a lot of people off and probably turn the whole world against us, and that wouldn't to be good, would it? |
