So according to Doonsbury only losers defend his right to portray members of the military in a negative light.

I'm amazed that military.com can be so liberal & socialistic & anti- military. They're no different than cbs, nbc, abc, cnn, msnbc, npr, & pbs. What a scum website.

Then why does it appear in Stars and Stripes? Because military subscribers requested it. "Never try to teach a pig to sing; It wastes your time and annoys the pig." - Heinlein |

Good God! do you realize you named off every major news agency except fox? You might consider a little diversity in your news intake. The last time I checked, freedom of the press was written into the Constitution. You remember the Constitution don't you? That thing you once swore an oath to support and defend? |

Of Course; Doonsbury Comic Garry Trudeau is Anti-American and Anti-Military. This paticular comic strip came into existance about four years ago!
I certainly hope we haven't been "enduring his biased strips" since 2003; and just realized he slams the Military very often! Oh; BTW, he would be for "Disbanding the Air Force" and all other defense cuts also! He's a Liberal! From A Proud Vietnam Veteran |

Got kind of a short memory Wes. Doonesbury has been around for quite a while, just took a long vacation. As to it being anti-military, I consider it funny as hell. The satire is great. If you can't laugh at the press and politicians, you can't laugh at anything. I've never seen anything that I would consider anit-military. A lot that pokes fun at power. A fine tradition established during the middle-ages. That's what the court jester was for. To remind the powerful that they put their pants on one leg at a time. |

I don't find anything "anti-military" about Doonesbury. Most of the shots taken are at politicians and the press. The strip has been around for quite some time...just took a long vacation. I think most vets who are not seriously insecure will see ironic situations similar to ones they experienced depicted with humor. Better to laugh than to cry. |

Please point out at least one specific strip which depicts the slamming of a military member... Seriously. Because I really can't recall any. Please don't damn me for asking for specifics. |

Becoming uptight about a very funny comic strip? You really need to get a life ...
BTW - Thank GOD for Liberals, the only TRUE Americans without which we would still be singing "God Save the Queen." |

I am sure that the Army bore all that in mind when they gave him the Commander's Award for Public Service last year ... and why John McCain wrote the forward to his latest book, The Long Road Home, all the profits of which go to Fisher House. |

I'm surprized the Strip used in the reference to open this topic -- isn't considered slamming the Military by some posting here!
For Example, Sgt Hightower is explaining why its good to be back in the military uniform. The other military member asks: "Like How? Like getting fired, drinking problems, nightmares, two divorces, time in the can?" Now, Pauzhaan -- Is this typical PRIOR CONDUCT to entering ACTIVE DUTY -- of the overwhelming majority of our current Troops? I view it as "tarnishing the character traits" of our Great Troops serving in Uniform? To me, like they did during Vietnam, its slamming the troops! I don't see anything funny about it! Please provide a link to a specific cartoon that "portrays members of the military in a negative light". Not the press, not politicians, members of the military. |

It’s not to bad I’ve seen some losers do a 180 and become good soldiers. In fact I think a soldier with some spunk isn’t a bad thing, especially in the field.

Another strip:
See: http://www.military.com/forums/0,15240,153540,00.html One Uniformed Member says: "They made me an officer, so act like I'm better than you!" Second Member says: "Go Suck a MOAB!" "Sir!" Again is this typical conduct of our officers and enlisted; today? I believe it's slamming the Troops -- depicting them as selfish, undisciplined, and telling the officers to "SUCK A MOAB" (Mother of All Bombs) ain't a comment of kindness! Moreover, using language akin to "I'm Better than You" to an enlisted member is conduct warranting displinary action! - Of Course, In my opinion; but, what do I know -- I only worked for the Air Force (in uniform and out) for 38 + years. - And, the wife and I produced two Great Children -- Who served as Captains on Active Duty; -- they damm well knew not to make such a "stupid statement" as described in the cartoon; - - - CAUSE THIS OLD MSgt would have had a piece of their "a$$!" Nuff Said! From A Proud Vietnam Veteran |

Saw the cartoon ... Nothing anti-military I could see, perhaps more of the truth than anything else. But I guess some people here are terrified of looking at the truth.

Stars and Stripes has been running that strip for a very long time ... the first time they tried to pull it was in 1973 ... but they got so much mail protesting the decision, from active military people, that they reinstated it, and it has been running there since.

Wes, are you telling me that there aren't officers who don't think they are better than the enlisted? C'mon, I've seen plenty and at times, even I was accused of the same thing. Enlisted men poke fun at their officers all of the time. Heck, I was even nicknamed the "yellow peril" by my guys. I didn't take offense at it. In fact, my first sergeant and I laughed our butts off in the privacy of my office. Loosen up man. We have enough diamond producing factories out there. |
