I guess it's time for us to move on, I think of all the Kaserns that were in Germany when I was there and it seems strange to think that there are so few American troops anymore, I'm going to Germany in Feb. and will be visiting the Frankfurt area and where I was stationed at the Edwards Kasern, it's gone now, housing was built there, I'm looking forward to seeing the changes.

I was stationed there also in 1961, 3rd Armd Div. Went back a few years ago. It stood empty. I had heard it was demolished and replaced by civilian housing.

I was stationed at Peden in the late '80... I remember hearing about Giessen and how much troops enjoyed that area.

You're right - I guess it is time to move on.

I was stationed there for 8 years, and worked as a civilian after the Army there as well. It's a great community, I hate to hear of it's closing...

It is truly great to see that the need/necessity for our presence in the host nation has dwindled to so small an extent. I wondered then if we'd ever leave. Now it appears we are all but gone.
I have fond memories of my 5 years in Germany.

Sixty-two years of occupation is long enough!

With this kind of time scheduling we will be in Iraq till almost the end of the 21st century.

Welcome home GI's, World War II is over.
Who won??

Joedokes, I agree Butzbach and Geissen were wonderful towns. In 1981/82 I was barracked at the Kasern in Butzbach but our ADA unit was posted at Geissen. Fond memories are with that post and a lot of Germany history. While there I worked 24 on/off and never got to see much of Germany. Now that I'm retired, I find that I really want to go back there and explore what I missed.
As for Rakkassan_2000, you're in basic training. From the sounds of it, your taking the training not giving it. Learn your history soldier, if we do not learn, then history does repeat.

I spent the better part of 2 and 1/2 years in Daener Kasern in Kaserslautern. Really enjoyed the area and our German hosts. I too am concerned with leaving as the Russians are starting to raise the sabers again. Don't trust Putin at all. Seems to be a dictator. As for Iraq, not enough boots on the ground to start with. Bad mistake. The war with Iraq is over. We are in the middle of a cival war amongst the tribes.

Army Wife: After spending over 4 years of my marriage to a soldier with the 1-1 CAV stationed in Buedingen, Germany, I feel sad to see the multiple Kaserns and military communities in Germany closing. Thank you for the wonderful memories!

I was stationed in Wildflecken in '60's...heard about Geissen many times and although I knew several who had been there, I never got here, myself. My wife was activated about a year ago and is at Landstul Hospital taking care of wounded coming out of Iraq/Afganistan. Germany is a neat place and of course, the best beer in the world!

I remember very well the second day after arrival in Giessen Transient housing the Baader Meinhof gang blew up a car in one of the housing areas.
I served as the Troop Issue Subsistense officer 142nd S&S bn 24th S&S Company, on two tours of duty there, in the 80's.
The wife and I sure will miss Germany.

It is hard to believe that it is really gone. After 4 years with the 42d on the depot it is odd to think of Giessen without the military prescense. I am looking forward to a trip back to see how everything is.

I was stationed in Giessen from 1970-72 with the "Horse Battalion" 3/79th. Our son Cory was born at 97th General Army Hospital in Frankfurt. My wife and I have many fond memories of "stroller" walks in our neighborhood. Our German/Austrian landlord family were wonderful, wonderful people. I was forwarded this "Giessen" news by another veteran and found my reaction to be one of nostalgia. I would love to go back someday and visit this place where I spent 1 1/2 years.

I was stationed in Giessen 1960 - 61 A Btry, 3rd Msl Battalion, 79th Arty. Have been back to Germany many times on business/pleasure. Love the country. I too am sad to see us leave, but the Deutsche govenrment has not supported us in Iraq...It's their loss.
