RE: http://forums.military.com/money-for-school/spouse-fami...ional-assistance-dea

I do not understand why a spouse of a veteran can not use the GI Bill. My husband does not plan on using this and I would love to use it. He is a veteran with no disabilites and I do not meet the current requirements to use the GI bill. Does anyone know any differently?

my husband just called about this for me to finish my LPN to RN degree, he was told that it's a "re-enlistment option" for spouses to use the GI bille. Basically my husband would have to re-enlist for 4yrs to turn his GI bill over to me to use for school. Also it is dependant on his MOS if this is an option anyway...so you have to meet those two standards: #1 MOS qualification, and #2 the 4 yr re-up requirement.

you can call the base education office (that's how we found out about it) to clarify this for you.

Dependant help!! I'm an 80% disabled vet(24yrs) and haven't used any school benefits. I've tried all ways to get my son help for NASCAR Tech. Inst. but 80% isn't disabled enough! Sure wish some provision would be made as it relates to my situation and other VETS in the same catagories! Shurt@military.com
email me any helpful ideas?

No chapter 35 for spouses and dependents is not under the new GIBill. You'll have to stay chapter 35.

lorimc: Because Congress didn't authorize you to use his VA Education Benefits. Congress makes the laws so you need to write your Congressional Representatives to get this changed.

steven01sgt2006: Today the Transferability of Benefits to Spouse/Children is only available to Active Duty Army soldiers who reenlist, give up part of their Bonus, meet several other qualifications, reup for 4 or more years. BUT SOON the Dept. of Defense (then each Branch of Service) will annouce the rules for Active Duty Service Members to transfer benefits to spouse/children. Just have to wait until the Rules and Regulations are annouced. BUT if your husband is a Veteran - no transferibility program is currently authorized by any Law.

18688462: Being only 80% disabled does not make your son qualified for any VA Education program - Sorry.

9969224: No - DEA Benefits under Chapter 35 were not changed in the law that started the Post 9/11 GI Bill program. Every thing remains the same for Chapter 35 benefits.

kb325: Hi. (Didn't want you to feel left out, lol.)

I was wondering if anyone knows if a spouse is just graduating from college, can the GI Bill be transfered to pay student loans?

I believe this is the way they can keep the money to themselves. My husband is using E Armyu to get his degree and the GI bill is just sitting there and I want to return to school, but because he is not dead or disabled I can't benefit from this. It is a sad day when as a Uniformed Service Member you have to suffer in some way to reap the benefits that are supposed to be for the members and their families. The soildier has worked for this and they should be able to extend it to any dependent that they choose. What a way to reward the family members for the support we give our soilders as they are away more than they are home.

Somehow you did not read the material. The GI Bill is for the Vet. PERIOD. The 9/11 GI bill does have ability to transfer, but that is limited and NEW. The family benefits because a college graduate has an opportunity to make more money. I do not expect this to change. A large majority of the recruits to all services are under 25 and single. The serve a term of duty and then leave, often using the GI bill to get additional training.

There are opportunities in all services to receive training, including a college education. Yet is is very hard for the crews of subs to find time to study at sea, and not much easier for those on ships with long deployments and tough op schedules.

The guys on the front lines in our two wars do not have time to crack open a book not directly related to their duties.

So, we the People of the United States via our representatives in Washington, DC have offered a benefit to our service members (or which I was one) to go to school with taxpayer assistance upon discharge from the. The offer was not to educate the family, but the veteran. And if during a tour they have time, there are programs to go to school with DOD help.

Since it appears that your spouse in on Active Duty status - from your comments above, you and he need to read here. http://www.gibill.va.gov/GI_Bi...fo/CH33/Transfer.htm

Please educate your self before you speak as you are confusing this program here: http://www.gibill.va.gov/pamph...Pamphlet_General.htm with the ability of your spouse to transfer benefits (if qualified) to you.

And it appears from your profile that you are working for the agency that is offering this program here: http://www.military.com/money-...advancement-accounts

And prior to 1 July 2008, there has never been a program that would allow dependents to use their spouse's GI Bill. Be thankfull that Congress is allowing this program to benefit the spouses and children in a way that has never been done before.

Thanks Catherine. Been there done that. I remeber how hard it could be to even do leadership and skill courses for E-5. 14 hour days at sea leave little mental power to absorb anything, and there are no weekends off.
