I am a Vietnam veteran. I will be 60 August
of 2008. I filled out the forms for education
benifits.I recived a letter in January tell me
that I am not eligible. The VA needs to change
that rule. Seems like they could send me to
Vietnam but not to school now.

You had 10 years to start using your GI education benefits.

I used some of my benefits and time ran out on using the rest when I returned to college in 2000. To make matters more frustrating, I had resided in Texas, (and still do) since my discharge in1980. But, because I was not a Texas resident and did not enlist in Texas, I was not eligible for the same free tuition program available to Texas veterans under the Hazelwood Act.

To finish college and get my BS cost me around $20,000, give or take a few hundred.

I could have cashed a few 401Ks and CDs, but getting a Stafford student loan consolidated at 2.99% was cheaper than cashing in 401Ks and CDs that were earning over twice that percent rate, and my wife is not responsible for repaying my student loan should I die before they are fully repaid.

It was never about the benefits or whether or not to take out a loan, it was about the degree and what I needed to do to get there.

I JUST WISH THEY WOULD STOP CALLING IT A BENEFIT. ITS NOT OR IT WOULD BE FREE. THEN THEY TELL YOU YOU ERNED IT FOR YOUR SERVICE TO THE MILITARY, NOT IF YOU DIDNT PAY INTO IT. SO YOU NEED TO REFRAISE HOW YOU ARE SAYING THINGS ON THE MILITARY SITE AND STOP BLOWING SMOKE. DONT TELL ME I ERNED IT IF I HAD TO PAY INTO IT.

Your best bet would be to contact your local chapter of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). They will help you with everything and make sure you are receiving all the compensation you deserve.

To 16309812 :

There is legislation being run up to make the G.I. Bill for life. It is co-sponsored by Ron Paul. As for other benefits. If it makes you feel better, at 65 you can go to college absolutely free.

H.R. 2247 : http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:h.r.2247::

I agree with you sir, they need to change the rule.

To 16971648 :

Sorry for your loss. In the house right now is H.R. 5229.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:h.r.5229::

The MGIB Educational Assistance Transferability Act of 2008. Not sure if it could help now that he has passed, but I can't remember the law that I'm thinking of but you should still be able to go. Any dependent of a Vietnam Veteran is giving a benefit to go to college. Check with your local Veterans Services Building.

To Pvt2dibiasi:

You must have served at least 2 years in order to be entitled to the G.I. Bill. However, I'd still check on it to make sure with your local Veterans Services building.

To 17711324 :

No, once you pay in you can not take the money out especially if you were not honorably discharged. If it was nothing too serious you may appeal and get it the discharged changed. From there you would have to assess the new variables.

Anyways, if you have any more questions I am going through the motions of getting everything going and have read a lot of the literature. Contact me and I'll try and help.

I left the army in 1998, at that time I was eligable for MGIB. I was called back to active duty in 2002 by the guard, under title 10 orders. so do i get a new eligability date starting from when I was released from active duty?

Why is it that I served my country and was honorably discharged, yet because of the particular years I happened to serve, I am ineligible for GI Bill benefits? Instead, I was offered the lame VEAP program, which didn't even begin to provide any real educational benefit. And to make matters worse, when the GI Bill was reinstated, no one bothered to think about the poor men and women who were stuck in this no man's land--what a disgrace.

Preach it brother. I served 4/1983 to 11/1986, honorable discharge, and on inactive reserves for 3 years after that. Was it my fault that the US decided not to start any big wars during that time? I mean, I wanted to kill a commie, but I didn't get the chance. Where's my education I earned? I voluteered to serve my country just like the rest of these people getting all the freebies. Gimme mine!! oh yeah, VEAP sucked!

The G.I Bill is the greatest piece of legislation to ever come out of Washington, D.C. I am a Korean Veteran, and had planned to make the Navy my career until President Truman extended many of us on active duty and gave us the G.I. Bill of Rights. Being a poor boy from Texas this was my first opportunity to go to college. I got out after four years of active duty. Three tours in Korea. Long story short, because of the G.I. Bill I earned three degrees. In Texas, after the G.I. Bill expires the Hazelwood Bill pays for tutition and fees. All veterans deserve the change to learn a skill or get a professional degree.
Kindest regards,
Dr. George W. "Bill" Whitt, Round Rock, TX

I find the rules behind the GI Bill setup to screw more veterans over. My situation is I signed up for a 3 year term and was deployed. I became injured during my deployment but the severity hadn't kicked in yet. I reenlisted at 29 months 22 days into my 36 month term. Served a total of 3 years 9 months. During my second enlistment my medical problems got severe enough to warrant my getting a medical discharge. Yet after serving my country and being injured for it I recieve a general under honorable conditions and my one goal for joining which was education benefits goes out the window. My first enlistment should have established my eligibility except a clause saying you need to serve 30 months before a new enlistment term starts or else the second term is used to establish eligibility. Of course no reenlistment officer told me that which if I would have delayed my reenlistment one week I would have been fine... I only found out after I tried using my GI Bill.

They constantly screw over veterans like myself and someone needs to fix that crap.

I would think you would want to weight all the information for both programs and go for the one that gives you the best benefits, a no brainer. Good luck to you and haglife.

I am a veteran of the Air Force and used my GI Bill back in the years 73-76. I received a AA degree from a local Community college here. At that time the economy was gong tits up, and never was employed full time for very long, and usually gettig temp. jobs in my field as i could.
The problem or issue i am having is back then i was getting around $270.00/month for school. I had to pay tuition, room and board, buy books and pay for school all with that measly ammount. Also, We were not allowed to get grants, until i was almost done with my degree. I never got over thqat ,nor the little amount i got back then for seving in Vietnam, and having a Honorable discharge.I am not ungrateful, just disalusioned a bit.
Now, one gets around $38,000, and up to four years, with far more options avail.
Why can our government not let us who are vets, obtain another two years or education. My degree was useless almost as soon as i got it.

I re-enlisted in the reserves in 1999 and as such was elegible for $10,000 MGIB for education. During this time, I spent 14 months deployed to Iraq. Due to injuries sustained on Active duty in Iraq, I was unable to re-enlist due to medical conditions in the reserves upon my REDFRAD from active to reserve status, and as such lost my MGIB education benefits. I left the reserves in 2005 with 18 years if combined active and reserve duty. Can I ever be considered for Educational benefits? I have been designated a disabled veteran by the VA. Any advice would be great.

Why does the VA not allow prior service the benefit of the GI Bill? I had a break in-service for almost 2 years when I decided to return to the military. I lost my GI bill from deployment and the chance to reinstate my GI bill. They want educated and trained soldiers but they make it so difficult.

Can someone explain who exactly is eligible for the new benefits package? I enlisted in 1999 and served two tours over there. I got out in 2007. Yet when I read through the Bill, it stated that an eligible person was one who enlisted or extended after September 30 2005... does this mean I will be stuck using the old bill? Please someone help interpret the legal jargon! I would be thankful....

Honorably discharged verteran, 03-1977 through 07-1982. On discharge I paid my own way through college. Graduated BS in 89. VEAP was a hardship not a benefit. I had to beg and scrape for college money and work study. The military took from the best, some gave it all. Many holes in this 911 GI bill. Bury this bill Pres. Whoever named this bill got it correct. GI emergency. Call 911.

My understanding is that time in service only counts once you areout od TRADOC. I think the one exceptionto that is if you were med boarded out and are on disability. Hope that helps.

It's a great deal to give "benefits" for education but it needs to be put into SIMPLE terms, so everybody can understand the if, ands or buts! The VA tries not to pay veterans because then they save money on the budget...the same is true for these educational benefits! I am a 32 year Veteran (Viet Nam and ending with Afghanistan). I had 10 years of active and the rest reserve duty. My career ended with Afghanistan with the Marines (and also a 3 week tour with the Army Special Forces). When I got back to the VA outpatient clinic in Orlando, where I had been for 10 years, I was treated like a stranger and found a very frustrating place! Within a year, I was on medical leave for PTSD treatment, which was a gift from the Afganhistan combat experience, when they terminated me. What I lost was the ability to continue a 25 year medical career as a Physician Assistant, that I used my initial education benefits for. Now, what do I do to start another career? I don't know if this new GI bill helps me and sure can't make heads or tails from the VA "help site! It all goes back to that famous saying " All who serve gave some, and some gave all"! I say we send some of these administration people for a tour or 2, just to see what we actualy go thru and put up with! Maybe then, the law makers will understand what we do, and what all our families have to deal with! I would just like some straight truth and answers! Now what???
