Another Goverment program with all kinds of wholes. I was injured Iraq in 2004 (TBI) and was discharged with out a med board. Since that time I was rated at 100% by the VA for my head injury. The proablem that I have had is that most benifits involve medical retierment from the military. Inaddition, since closed head injurys (TBIs) are not being recognized by DOD as a purple heart injury. That pretty much eliminates all thte other benifits. I have been told that I am not the only one in this position IS there going to be a fix? With my wife getting her cancer back these benifits would go a long way to helping my family and I.

This is a great little tool, but I plan to transfer benefits to my daughter since I already have a Master's Degree. Can you adjust the calculator to show how much my daughter can get in benefits?

The Calculator is just a rough estimate. You need to go to the www.gibill.va.gov - read about the program and compute the exact money based on A. how much tuition and fees are covered for your state B. how much the institution will be chargeing your daugther for attending C. what the BAH rate is for that school's zip code.

For example A. your state pays $151.00 per credit hour enrolled and $8000.00 Fees per semester. B.your daugther enrolls in 12 credit hours that cost $137.00 per credit hour and $3000.00 in fees - Since the school charges less than the max authorized for your state - all of her tuition and fees are cover.
C. You click on the BAH link and input your daugthers school zip code and find out exactly how much she will be paid each month for the housing allowance. D. for the book stipend - multiply $41.67 X 12 (# of credit hours she is enrolled into) and that will be the book stipend she will receive each semester (not to exceed $1000.00 annually).

If your daugther's tuition and fees exceed the max allowed for your state (state attending school - not where you live) then you have to pay the difference - UNLESS that school is particapating in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Too simple - rules are all here: www.gibill.va.gov

Also - please start a new discussion when your question does not pertain to the topic of the tread you are reading.

I could only register for 11 hours of courses due to my full time work and available classes in the community college that I am going to. I am approved for 90 percent (I am short 9 days to 36 months, yayks!)...will the 11 hours of credit be considered not 100 percent too?

The 11 hours will get you paid the housing allowance provided some of the classes are in a classroom - The VA will only pay 90% of the Tuition and 90% of the Fees to the college, you will be responsible for the other 10% of each. You will be paid 90% of the housing allowance authorized for that colleges zip code and 90% of the book stipend.

No - you must be enrolled at more than the 1/2 time rate of pursuit - for undergraduate courses that would be 7 credit hours if your enrolled in 16 week courses. Your school certifying offical will be able to verify this information so please check with them.

Thanks again Counsel...that's what the calculator told me too, and it helps if a person like you says so. I will definitely do what you said...to ask my school VA Rep or counselor.

If I add more classes, ONLINE or DISTANT CLASS, same school, will I still be covered? Say, I will have total of 14 hours of classes.

See, I need to use my internet times, a lot, so this posts Razz

Yes - as long as the courses are required for your education objective.

I retired 4 1/2 months after 9-11 as my date was determined before the attack on our soil. As a 22 year vet I feel we get cheated since we retired and already served our time in the military but our time was just up.

Hi Counselor, I just want to be raise this while I still have time to change my classes.

As I can't find any figure in as far as Online and Traditional credits or classes for BAH on how many hours of the two to qualify for BAH. If I enroll for 8 hours of online courses, and 4 traditional to equal full time 12 hours at same college. Will that give me BAH? or do I have to have minimum 7 hours traditional to get the BAH?

To follow up above....here is what the VA site said on it.

If your entire enrollment is distance or online training you are not entitled to the BAH portion of the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

If just one of your classes is categorized as “in-residence” and you are otherwise eligible, you would be entitled to the applicable BAH rate for the time you are engaged in “in-residence” training. This may include in-residence course(s) at the secondary school, provided you will receive credit toward your degree program for those courses.

The BAH will be determined by the ZIP code of the “in-residence” course(s) school location.

To get the housing allowance you have to be going to school at a rate of pursuit of greater than 50%(total hours taken) AND be in at least one in-residence course. Given your previous post, yes you would get the housing allowance.

That supports my understanding of it too kb325...and will work fine with me. I'm just kind'a afraid that the VA will "clarify" it later once the classes are on. Wink

And how does the 36 months of this benefit counted again?

Are they being quiet on my question because of it's flaw? If the MGIB is the basis (below from VA website), will they cut the BAH too and let you live in a half room Razz

You can get up to 36 months of full-time education benefits under the GI Bill after completing the full period of your enlistment.

If you were discharged (before completing your full enlistment) for a service-connected disability, a pre-existing medical condition, hardship, a physical condition that interfered with duty, or a reduction in force, you may earn one month of entitlement for each month of active duty.

If you were discharged (before completing your full enlistment) for the convenience of the government, you can get up to 36 months of full-time benefits if you completed:

· 20 months of a two-year enlistment, or

· 30 months of a three-year enlistment.

Complete and send an application for education benefits to get information about your eligibility. Application instructions are available by clicking here.

If you’re eligible for more than one VA education program, you can get up to 48 months of benefits by combining the multiple programs.

NOTE: Rates & months of entitlement are adjusted proportionally according to your enrollment. If you are enrolled for less than full-time training, the months of entitlement will increase. For example, if you’re enrolled for ½ time training, you’ll receive 72 months of benefits instead of 36. However, your monthly payment will be ½ of that paid for full-time enrollment.

For additional help, please use the "Ask a Question" tab at the top of this page, or call 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551).

You are confusing the rules for chapter 30 (MGIB) and chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill). They are 2 totally different beast.

But didn't the law said the VA will execute it? I'm just anticipating the VA will copy what they've implemented where they could.

Still, you are right...I was not even particular of the chapter numbers of the two Wink

Gilbert - there is a seperate law governing VA education benefits for Ch30 Montgomery GI Bill Education Benefits - it was passed around 1986 I think (but don't remember).

The law governing CH33 Post 9/11 GI Bill was passed July 2008. There are completely different rules for these two laws.
