RE: http://forums.military.com/money-for-school/gi-bill/5-must-know-gi-bill-facts

I feel since I didn't use my GI Bill in the 10 year time frame I was jolted! I feel congress should increase the GI Bill timeframe to a lifetime!

I agree. You earned it, you should be able to use it whenever you want too. I also believe that a veteran married to a disabled veteran is penilized, and cannot use the benefits for both. I think that is very unfair.

What about Reservists that serve overseas in Iraq and earn the extra benefits for that active duty time just to learn that when they drop to the IRR they loose the extra benefits? Isn't that something Vets should know about. The scam of not giving Vets their due....same thing for centuries.

If you get out and don't take advantage of your GI bill when it is given to you that's your problem. Ten years is a long time you could take one class at a time while working full time and rasing a family and still have time left over! I reccomend to all, that the day you get out you take at least one class and continue to do so no matter what is going on. The money is there and won't stop until you stop or graduate which ever comes first.

For the Reservist I don't think it is fair if you get the full time benifits just because you were full time for one year big deal when you get home you are back to part time while the rest of us work our a@@ off for those full benifits for full time work!

I agree with it should be a lifetime educational opportunity. I distinctly remember being informed at my Air Force out-processing meeting that I had 10 years in which I had to start using my G.I. Bill... Otherwise I would lose it. When I seperated, I started my new career as a Firefighter and, bought my house (used my VA Loan). I didn't plan on starting my college career because that was not an immediate priority for me. Frown
