As of 2002 when I had 41 coxswain certification there, the highest level was a basic 41 certification. Not really much of a need for Heavy Weather or Surfman although heavy weather wouldnt hurt. If they have their 47 now, things may have changed.

Generally speaking, you have no business anywhere near breaking surf there. You wont make it back. Eek

Heavy weather coxswain. Currently we have none, however we are classified as a heavy wx station so you can attend the school and obtain the qual. We only have one heavy weather platform (the MLB) so maintaing your qual would not be possible as we can not conduct heavy weather training with only one heavy weather platform.

Somehow, this doesnt surprise me at all. Seems to reflect a common CG theme in that it makes absolutly no common sense, yet is standard operating procedure. Who thought of this master plan?? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller.. Bueller..

Yeah we are out here. I had to tow an 87' Patrol Boat to keep my Heavy Wx qual current a few years ago, as I was at a HeavyWx Sation with one MLB also. Maintaning your qual can be done, but yes it's a pain w/ 1 MLB

why is it such a pain to get and maintain a HWC qual at a station with just one MLB

The designation of the HWX Station's(and surf Stations) decide where the 47 mlb's will ultamtely reside. Stations that are not can expect to see the 45 RBM's arrive and their 47 depart.

Hwx Training is hard with one 47mlb and to maintain currency is difficult as well. But I am going out today to get my bow to and stern to HWX recert accomplished with a 87.
SJA93--its hard because you need 2 boats that can go in HWX to conduct drills.

oh, ok. so what your saying is if a non designated HWC or surf station has a MLB then it will be replaced with an RBM

Back in bootcamp in '82, when my turn came up to pick a billot, there was Station Honolulu along with Station Ft. Lauderdale. Instead, I dove at the USCGC Chase in Boston. I remember the instructors looking at me like, "huh?"

Please don't tell me how awesome Station Honolulu is so I can continue to think I made the right decision. Wink

Hey....I enjoyed the cutter so no regrets I guess. Big Grin

I seem to remember the a HWX cox'n is different than a surfman. You can have a hwx cox'n train in one boat (MLB) but to train in the surf, you need two. We operated as hwx cox'n on the great lakes with just one boat all the time. We could go out in a storm in the 12' wind chop and train all we wanted. We weren't required to have stand-by boat as we were not designated as a surf-station, but did some surfing in the 44'.

This must be a recent change?

But getting back to the original question, isn't the ferry-driver at Sta Hono the highest you can hold? Smile

It's now operated by civilians hired by D14. They make a ridiculous amount of money to drive that P.O.S. Lets just say I've towed it more than I've ridden in it.

OK, now for an IMPORTANT question. Looks like I will be taking my wife back to hawaii for another vacation. This time I may be in Hono for a couple days.

the important question:

Anyone know the hours for Club 14? Thought I'd show her the scene of many crimes......

I had soooo forgotton about that thing. Thats the ONLY CG owned vessel I have ever seen that we would but anyone in charge of. Didnt matter if it was a YN, or SA. I saw one poor girl run that SOB up on the rocks by the Station fueling pier.

I find that Hawaii is one of those places that you either love, or hate. I loved it. Every waking moment I loved it. That place has a way of working into your blood, and once that tick bites, its all over. You will return again, and again.
