I know which small boat stations are designated surf stations, but I’ve heard that realistically it’s difficult to get surfman qualified at a number of them due to a lack of trainable days. Which stations are these?
John, several of the Surf stations in Oregon have trainable Surf. Some have more than others, some river bars Siuslaw, Umpqua , and Tillamook break regularly. Some break only when the conditions are right and the swell is larger Coos Bay, Yaquina Bay hence the 52'(MLB) SPC-HWX. These units have larger river Bars, but also beach surf that is workable. When surf is on the river entrance Bar to Yaquina Bay it is often very large read between 14 to 16 ft up to 30 plus feet breaking. Chetco River has somewhat of a southerly facing Bar so some days they may get some Surf when others have none. Depoe Bay is in a world of its own they have Surf outside the Hole and often do joint beach Surf training with Yaquina Bay. The WA stations Cape D and Grays Harbor both have Surf, the Motor Lifeboat school has its unit on the Columbia River Bar on a strong ebb tide with a average swell breakers may be present, that area has several training areas each with its own Surf area. Every unit has trainable Surf some more than others, some units have beach Surf, river Bar Surf and more than one training area. Any Surf station is a Good Surf station.
