Are there any overall differences between the BM1 and BM2 shopping lists? Are there more afloat vs. ashore jobs for BM1 than there are for BM2. Is there are lot less to choose from after advancing to BM1?

thanks

The answer to your question lies in the Enlisted Billets Manual

I have noticed while looking at the shopping list, without being an XPO, BM1 jobs do not sound as enticing as BM2 jobs. BM2's have the best jobs in the guard IMO.

Very true! Thats why BM's should strive to get an XPO assignment. Its in our blood to lead, and being an XPO is the beginning of that path! I am a firm believer that every BM1 and BM2 should screen for XPO and submit and dreamsheet to get the job. If you miss out on a job, there will always be the following year.

As for BM2's having the best jobs...I agree and disagree. There are some sweet BM2 jobs all over the CG, but its even sweeter to be the XPO or OIC!

I agree, Chief! Anyone who wants to go BM should understand that the ultimate goal should be for command. There are still some great opportunities for BM1's. There are awesome jobs afloat as OPS/1LT on 110's and 175's, as well as high levels of responsibility at bigger stations. I'm currently on a 225' and although it's not command, you still get a great level of experience within both deck and ops department to make it a great career development platform. Don't be afraid of the jobs that seem like less fun because of the level of responsibilty. They'll only make you a better Boatsainsmate.

Might even make us better Boatswain Mates also.

Just pulling your chain boats! To be honest it didnt get better until my tour on the Mabs. 175 or 225 is a great stepping stone. Any small cutter! Pick up your OOD letter, some experience and move to the XPO job. My experience, take the jobs in the middle of no-where. Keep preaching it brother...maybe you can get Ski motivated. Smack him for me!

I'm working on it. He's waiting for the XPO msg to hit the board (hopefully today). He's one of only a handfull that I know of that put in for my job.

Thank you for pointing out my slip of the finger that was already addressed two posts and two months before your reply. Your thoughtful insight and compelling input on the subject of the thread are much appreciated... Wink
