Where does it state how long a unit is authorized to to display an award pennant such as Meritorious Unit Award? Also, where does it state that you are authorized a star for every three years of sea service after receiving your sea service ribbon?
Does anyone know what chapter and paragraph that the Sea Service additional award is in. I see in the chart what star to wear but no other information pertaining to when you can add the star.

So what does that tell you? You see one place that describes what it is for, and another that tells you what device denotes subsequent awards.
By the way - you are not going to find the award pennant answer. It was stripped out of the manuals. The last manual clearly said 36 months from award date.
I hope those are really two questions, one for your unit and one for your shirt as the Sea Service ribbon is not one you would have displayed at your unit. (Although, I have seen some cutters with a sea service ribbon on their bridge wing!)
The one I remember the most was a 140 where the folks were making a show out of putting their first 'star' on their sea service ribbon. We were visiting their pier. My QMC looked at me and (loud enough for them to hear) asked if I thought we could fit four silver and a bronze star on a SS ribbon for our 205!

That nobody knows exactly where to find the required time limit to receive a subsequent star for the sea service ribbon.
...or maybe that under today's current regs that the sea service ribbon is like every other ribbon/award that exists, there IS NO DIFFERENCE between a first and second award! Folks are 'thinking' that there is, but the truth is that there 'was' but there 'ain't' right now. Just read what the book says.
I remember back in my day that the unit award was in fact as you stated 36 months OR as long as any member of the unit was stationed at that unit that recieved that award....Great SWE question!!!
Cliff; I hadn't heard the 'member still there' part before, but about 2 years ago, one of the folks who write SWEs called me about this very question. (We had served together as QM1s before). After a lot of digging and a little bit of luck finding a paper copy of an old manual, he did find that statement about 3 years from date of award.
So what I am taking away form this is that to many people this seems like a joke. These are questions that could be on the service wide, or used to develop our subordinates. The real answer to this question is nowhere to be found.
The real answer to this question is nowhere to be found.
The current manual has been in effect nearly six years, it is in there, clear as mud. This topic seems to pop up every few months since, and still leaves one a bit confused. Apparently though it is not a high priority in the administration of your agency or it would have been corrected years ago.
So I'd guess you could characterize it as kind of a joke.
