Quick question. What score do you have to get on the ASVAB to be a BM?

Minimum overall score required to enter the CG is 40. For BM, it is:

BM: AR + VE = 100

AR = Arithmetic Reasoning
VE = Verbal Ability

Good Luck!

As the old saying went, "If you can't make rate, go Bos'n Mate."

Just kidding

I always found it funny that BM's have one of the lowest ASVAB score requirements. It makes no sense to me since BM's are Coxswain's, BO's, U/W OOD's and OIC's. You would think they would have a higher score requirement since they are put in leadership roles with large amounts of responsibilities. Just my humble opinion.

That just goes to show that they have always allowed someone with no operational experience make decisions on behalf of this organization. Eek

I have the UP MOST respect for the BM rating during my 30…..retired NAVENG W3 Sends

Sir (and my fellow Chief);
Since you unknowingly just made a stab at the person who sits in the desk next to me, let me offer a correction. The person who makes that decision is the BM RFMC. The person who by assignment is the Senior BM in the CG. (I know I don't need to go into his 'operational experience' level.) As RFMCs, we have control over the ASVAB requirements for our ratings. The ASVAB requirements are one of the minimal qualifications to ENTER the rating at the apprentice level. In this case it measures what Mathmatical Thinking ability and what Communication ability a person has to be a very basic BM3. For such things like Coxswain, BO, OOD and OinC, we have other, much more succesful measurements, most noteably, Command recomendation.

I wanted to be a BM becaouse I would really really really like to be a DOG! I was also interested in doing narcotics detection with a K9 aswell. Is the 100 on AR and VE the only ASVAB requirement?

A combination of those two tests must equal 100 to go to BM "A" school. No ASVAB test score required to strike BM (besides the 40 it takes to get into the CG).

Oh Ok. so this brings up my next question. Are there stations you should request if you want to be a boarding officer or be in DOG? Do you have to be with Maritime Law Enforcement to get involved in these programs? Thanx for the help so far. I want to find out as much as I can befor I join up.

Normal color vision, also once you make BM3 you may want to enter a LEDET/TACLET, MSST, MSRT etc. in order to be a part of the DOG.

As NyCrims stated, the Deployable Operations Group is an elite group of Law Enforcement Specialists, however, going to any CG Station you will be required (once you make BM3) to get Boarding Officer Qualified. From what I've seen, people in that field usually go to a regular station, get some LE experience, and then apply for those positions; however, it is possible (from what I've heard, since I struck and did not go to A school) to get a MSST pick right from BM "A". Personally, I would not recommend that. Go to a unit, begin to learn the basics of your rate, since DOGs, MSSTs, and TACLET/LEDETs may not give you a well rounded beginning that you need as a new BM. Just my .02. Good luck to whatever you do, and as we've already seen, don't be afraid to ask questions.

BM2 sends...

Sorry MC, I was not trying to diminish anyone’s credibility or hard work. I just have seen too much “off the cuff” decisions in my time. Maybe this was the wrong topic to label. I do know that you and others have knowledge of other situations that wasn’t given enough thought before implementing organizational changes or policy. I still think BM’s Rock !!
