I recently came across an old photo of my current station (Cleveland) from the 1950's. In the photo there were some wearing a rate patch that had a crescent moon on it. I have tried some searches on the internet but I haven't found anything about what rate would have a crescent moon for an insignia. Does anyone know what this is or what rate this is?
If the photos were from pre 1948 the rating could have been Ships Cook,Baker or Steward. If from after 1948 the rating would have been Steward. That specialty mark was changed again in about 1964.
Ships Cook was changed to Commissaryman in 1948. The rating was merged with Steward in 1973 to form Subsistance Specialist (SS). That rating was re-named Food Service Specialist (FS) in 1996. The reserve Fire and Safety Specialist (FS) was dis-established a couple of years earlier, freeing up the FS for another rating.

You can also see Cuba Gooding Jr. wearing the Navy version in Pearl Harbor (the disgusting Ben Affleck movie my girlfriend makes me watch). When he's leaving the sick bay after getting stitched up by Kate Beckinsale, he's wearing the PO2 version.
Out of curiosity, looks like that may be a Hollywood OOPS.
Cuba Goodings character was Doris(Dorie)Miller, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions. A destroyer was later named for him.
The OOPS. At the time Miller was a Stewardsmate second class. Todays equivalent is Seaman Apprentice. His insignia most likely would have been just the crescent moon, worn as a striker mark. He was advanced in June 1943 to Cook 3rd class. His rating badge would have been as in the illustration and he would be wearing a CPO type uniform. He was KIA in the USS LISCOMBE BAY in Nov 1943
