So I was taking a boat forces RFO practice test from the web site and the question was how many watertight spaces does the 41' UTB have?
I said, 2 (the lazzerette and the forepeak). I was wrong. Apparently the correct answer would be 4.
I looked it up and found that the 41 type manual states that the the lazzerette and forepeak are watertight, while the fuel tanks are also watertight (to the welldeck) and the engine room is also watertight (to the main deck).
This simply does not make sense to me. Using this logic you could say that a canoe is watertight...up to edge, or a cup is watertight.
Merriam Webster defines watertight as: 1 : of such tight construction or fit as to be impermeable to water except when under sufficient pressure to produce structural discontinuity.
With this being said it would take "sufficient pressure" to produce "structural discontinuity" in order to have this watertight space breached. But by RFO standards all it takes is the sufficient ANGLE to breach the watertight integrity.
I think this a topic of many discussions. On every board I've sat on, we have always said that the 2 "truely" watertight compartments were the Laz and Forepeak. It is kinda retarded, why don't they just say they are water resistant.
When I went through STAN team 2 years ago, it was 2. If in doubt call the STAN team at Yorktown. Great Source of Information, they are very helpful, counter to what most say.
