i would answer about the flanking but if you haven't been on the river you wouldn't get it.

but i will say this it one of the most amazing manuevers i have ever witnessed from the buoy tender to being in the wheel house.

basically if you hold your thumb out(Thomas Point right above Baton Rouge) like you are hitchiking and the river is hauling arse you would take at least a 30 barge tow which is about 5 acres 1200 feet long. and turn it around your thumb. down river with the current trying to plant your butt boat barges etcon the bank. and when you successfully flank that one Wilkinson Point is comming right up!!!

ok what is a flanking buoy? (used for)

later

A bouy tied to the barges will let the skipper of the tow know which is going faster, the barges or the buoy,(current wise) they want the speed of the tow about the same.

Commander - a very large sized fid used when splicing hawser of the larger circumferences.

Makes getting the fid, a not so bad afterall experience.

Heres another one for you:

What does the "alpha" designation mean when added to the end of a VHF radio frequency? (For example, 21A, 23A, etc...).

Was this answered?

If this is the answer, I cheated by looking it up.

Note that the letter "A" indicates simplex use of the ship station transmit side of an international duplex channel, and that operations are different than international operations on that channel. Some VHF transceivers are equipped with an "International - U.S." switch for that purpose. "A" channels are generally only used in the United States, and use is normally not recognized or allowed outside the U.S. The letter "B" indicates simplex use of the coast station transmit side of an international duplex channel. The U.S. does not currently use "B" channels for simplex communications in this band.

A for American, I for International. And It does go down the simplex / duplex route.
