Does any one know where I can find a Tactical Coxswain Insignia. I know this is not an authorized uniform item but, but when the "C" scholl was in Yorktown the instructors had T-shirts with the insignia on it. I'm goiing to have a unit t-shirt made.

Currently there is no Tactical Coxswain insignia, I'm assuming the crews at the SMTC had a contest and someone drew one up for shirts. The original coxswain and surfman insignia are still the only ones.
Who knows it may change.

I saw such a shirt when I was at SMTC. It was a coxswain insignia with crossed swords instead of oars

OK, someone throw me a freakin bone here (Dr. Evil). What does a Tactical Cox'n do that any other coxswain doesn't do in every day/night L/E?

Don, there is no such thing, so you, or anyone else can make up any type of description you'd like...

Sounds to me like something a group of Cox'n "C" instructors thought about doing while sitting at Hooters... then got a few t-shirts made up... nothing important (except to them) nothing official.

Wray,
There is such a thing as Tactical Coxswain (though there is no such insignia). It is just an additional competency, there is also Heavy Weather Coxswain, ATON Coxswain (this one's new), etc.

Don,
I don't want violate OPSEC so I won't go into specifics, but you basically complete the regular coxswain certification, get some more training, and certify as tactical coxswain. Then there are some additional currency requirements to maintain the certifcation. I am sure your brother at the MSST is familiar with this.

I will make an educated guess that it has to do with similar training that we had with CBP. We just called it "additional training" and no one was promoted to a "tactical level". Wink Big Grin Just a little friendly jab, no offense.

add if you've never heard of Tactical Coxswain, I'm sure you have no idea about pursuit coxswain either.

It sounds like very good training and I think all Coxswains should benefit greatly from it.

I hope no one thinks I was teasing about the training....just the idea of an Insignia for each. Is there a Towing Cox'n Insignia????? Big Grin Cool

Wray, the Special Missions Training Center (SMTC) is staffed with our members. Like most other places we are just "borrowing" some space from the USMC in this case.

To attend Special Missions Training Center (SMTC): Must be a currently certified coxswain on a Coast Guard boat and attached to a Level I PWCS unit. MSST, MSRT, and PWCS level I station personnel must have all Defender Class type tasks completed. PSU personnel must have all TPSB type tasks completed. Must have been a certified coxswain on a CG boat for a minimum of SIX MONTHS (cumulative).

OK, now my interest level has peaked....if a cox'n in Miami is out on a boat and sees a very suspicious go-fast with bales or loaded with fuel drums, is he/she not authorized to chase it if he/she has only been a cox'n for 4 months?

Don Confused

The SMTC is no longer borrowing (much) space, they (we) have had our buildings completed and have started to utilize them. The first class went through earlier this year and we have been teaching all the classes through the new buildings since. The SMTC is primarily a CG unit, but has a Marine Detachment and a Navy Detachment that teach their own courses. Its a very unique command structure, similar to a Task Force or OPBAT structure, but purely for a school-house mission. In the future, the Name will be changing to the Joint Maritime Training Center (JMTC) to help recognise the other services that compose the unit.

Side note: previously the PSU TRADET located in Ohio was moved to MCB Camp Lejeune in the late 90's. Near the 2003 time the name changed to reflect new courses being offered to the current Special Missions Training Center. With the ever changing unit curriculum and structure, the name will change at least once more to the Joint Maritime Training Center.

This is for the Tactical Coxswain. Tactical Coxswains are not going to be chacing down migrant and drug vessels....

For pure opsec purposes I'm not going to dwell any more into this, but I will say that it is being looked at and a solution is well into the making to cover a "Mission Gap" so to say.

Nasty, my son showed me the CG assets down there when I visited him last summer. You may see them out training in the AAV's.

Did you have any luck getting those videos from CBP? That was you that was asking me, right? The guy I suggested you contact, Mann, he is an extra in the final scene of "Fast and Furious Two" in the SWAT gear. Obvously you'd have to know who to look for. I saw it again last night, which is the only reason I mention it.
