When giving a position should it be written as 13-27.35N when doing tenths. (ofcourse add the degree symbol after 13). or should it read 13-27.35'N. Again that is tenths, I understand seconds would be with the ' and " symbols. People at my unit swear they have always used ' when dealing with tenths, although I have never, nor have I seen anyone at any other unit I have been to.

They are both acceptable. Using the ' after the decimal tenths is the "more correct" way of writing the position.

Its just a formality issue. Like prayforsurf said, they are both acceptable. It's really no big deal, unless someone wants it that way.

put the ' at the end and the . before the tenths to ensure someone doesn't make a mistake and think you meant seconds.

Nav charts will come in either seconds or tenths of a minute....you just have to know which when plotting or you could have a problem. Wink

Yep, on the Great Lakes charts, depths are in FEET, not FATHOMS, and lat/longs are in tenths.

Since we're talking about lat and long, here's a question for you...

The typical belief is that 1 degree of latitude equals 60nm. In reality the distance of 1 degree of latitude depends on the latitude it is measured from. At what latitude is 1 degree truly 60 nm?
