I was just reading up on the Boutwell and that looks like a great ship. The port calls sound awesome. Panama, Coasta Rica! I bet it'd be demanding on board as a non-rate but hey, everyone's got to learn right? Would that be a good place to start? Any recommendations for the ADC? Looking to go BM, possibly in the LE side further down the line. Thanks.

I went to the Chase, WHEC-718 right out of bootcamp back in Jan '83. It was a great learning experience for me with the L/E in the Caribbean and the travel including Europe.

The Chase was out of Boston back then.

So are there bases outside of the districts? I've heard of Cutters going to Africa and South America, are these just port calls or do people get stationed there?

The 378's will go where they are needed.

USCG Cutter Midget in the Persian Gulf

They will do port calls all over the world, not just for recreation but also on occasion to train militaries in various countries.

Most of the 378's are now stationed on the West Coast and Hawaii. I think there is only two left on the East Coast, someone correct me if I am wrong.

Hello Amelnik33 I am on of the three BM2's on board Boutwell. Have you received orders to the Boutwell?

She is a great ship. With great opertunities to learn.

We have a dedicated LE Divsion. There is only 5 to 6 crew in the division. But we also offer a collateral BTM and BO duties.

In the last 2.5 years I have been all over the Pacific Ocean. With Port O Call from Panama, Peru, Shanghi, Yakuska Japan, Victoria BC, Pearl Harbor HI and of course Dutch Harbor and Kodiak Alaska to name a few.

Stay positive and focus on your goal and you will enjoy every minute of your time at any unit.

My suggestion would be to get the biggest whittest/reddest ship that is as far away from your hometown as possible! In this day and age there is a very real possibility that these types of ship may be doing more "goodwill" tours of places in every coner of the globe, to repair the damages done over the last 8 years of Bush. I took a WLB 180' out of bootcamp, and tho I had great times and made lifelong friends, I do wish I'd taken something bigger on the west coast and gotten a chance to see more of the world. Then again many of those who've been to countries I can't begin to pronounce haven't had the opportunity to anchor off Sault St Marie and go into town hoggin' ! -Jeff

I can't understand the people on the forums trying to find out how to limit "Sea time". That's what I'm going in for! Anyways thanks for all the advice guys. I'll see you out there!

You may get like I was....feeling bored as all heck when we were inport between patrols. Then again, it's a whole lot easier being that way when you're single with no kids. I can't say I would love being underway with a wife and kids left behind. I guess it would depend on the wife. Big Grin

First unit -CGC Jarvis 378' (HI).
Struck BM and then went to a LEDET. Sounds like what your aiming for.

Highly recommend any 378' for your first unit.
As some of the above say, do it while your young, no kids, not married, and yes get as far away from your comfort area (home) as possible.

Good luck

You "Caution me" PO Koushan? What does that mean? I'm very well aware of Bush's position in the military chain of command but thanks for the clarification. If you could please show me where in the TOS I'm required to keep my political views out of the discussions then I will glady edit my post. In the interim might I suggest you contribute something of value to the original posters question, rather than getting bent out of shape over someones personal political opinions. -Jeff

Obviously you haven't spent much time perusing the various threads in the "Soapbox". Heated discussions regarding the current administration are very common on this forum.

I've missed the GALLATIN since the day I left on Jul 1, 2005!!! I would say the best times of my life, even if I didn't know it then. I would love to go back, and wouldn't complain about 1 in 4 duty!
