I know this is a little late in the game to be asking, but I recently found out about a billet that just opened that was never on the list, and still isn't. It would of been one of my top picks if it was on the list. I have been asking advice and some say don't mess with it, others say update it. What I'm worried about is, if the detailer already has me penciled in, or that this might make things more complicated. I don't want to draw a red flag. I'm just nervous and I am not sure if I should mess with it or not. On the flipside, since its most likely no one has put in for it, if I update it, I may have a good shot of getting it.
I was looking through the BM topics searching for transfer info for a BM2 friend of mine. Saw your post and had to chime in.
I had the same scenario. I found out a member was transfering out of my dream job and was never listed on the shopping list so I didn't put it down. I knew the OIC, sent him an e-mail asking if he knew of anyone ordered in yet. He said not that he knew of so I applied via e-mail to the detailer VIA CHAIN OF COMMAND requesting to apply for the job. This is a highly sought after job so I wanted to get my name in the hat if there was any chance of it being open.
I received an e-mail from the detailer stating it was closed. I passed on to the OIC it was closed and wished him good luck.
Two weeks later I received a phone call from the detailer directing me never to go through the unit to inquire about any jobs. All jobs applied for will go through the detailer.
My advice to you? At least submit an e-mail to the detailer, THROUGH YOUR CHAIN, requesting to apply for the job if it's available. You will never have a chance if you don't ask!
On a side note: My personal belief is the big man upstairs will put us wherever he needs us to be.
1st tell me what it is........talk with your command about emailing the detailer. Let him know what you are thinking, he may tell you don't worry about it, already gone or put it on there. But talk to your command.
I have always put a few wild card billets on my "dream sheet". Never had the experience of having to back pedal for a job - in the future I highly recommend putting those dream "closed" billets on your list - for just this type of circumstance... The advice about making a chain of command style request sounds solid, talk it over with your current command and see what they say. If you do put in the request make sure you use language that explains how the dream billet will better serve the needs of the service and develop you professionally. Saying "this would be great because it's a job I know and I get to stay in my home town" doesn't get you very far.
If you have read the Assignment Officers message that came out, it specifically stated do not put closed "dream" billets on you e-resume. It slows down the process. Plus if a billet is closed it is closed. If it opens due to an unforseen cicumstance then you should email the detailer through the chain of command.

Your advise is correct. When you are dealing with something as important as your career and family relocation you absolutley need to speak up! Shame on you if you dont!

What do you guys think??
Well, in the big scheme of things, how does this billet measure up to the rest? Would it be your #1 pick? Is it better for you personally, or professionally? If you don't ask for it, you will not get the orders.
You have to decide what's best for you and your career. If your detailer already has you penciled in, he will tell you. (Calling/emailing him directly about the undisclosed billet might be a cheap way to find out where you're going, if you are penciled in.)
I do not think detailers change their mind or say no just because someone updated their dream sheet. (Pi$$ing them off is another story, but I don't think this will cause them to flip out.
