I have been considering joining the Air force since high school(I'm 22 now). Since then I have completed 1 year of college but found it to be way more expensive than I could afford even with financial aid. So that, along with afew other reasons, is why I ultimately decided to take the plunge. After making that decision, I have been back and forth with weather to join the Reserve or go for Active Duty. I would really like to get my degree but I have read that the Reserve gives a maximum of $4,500 a year for tuition assistance. I was also considering doing 4 years of active duty, then going back to school with a GI Bill, but whos to say I will want to give it up after 4 years? I have also read by several people that it is possible(through online classes and MUCH focus and determination)to recieve your degree while in basic. I know this is a decision I have to make for myself, but some opinions and facts would really help to make my decision more clear. Thank you

Have you considered joining a ROTC program - that way you will receive your college degree and then complete a tour with the Air Force as a commissioned officer. Also, Basic is your 1st training session in the military - you would not be able to attend any college classes while in Basic - what people were referring to is working hard during your enlistment (after you complete basic and AIT) to take as many college courses (nights and weekends and maybe lunch time classes) to complete your education during your 3 or 4 year enlistment. Thank you for your reply. I did not mean to say recieve a degree while at basic, I ment to say while on active duty. Sorry about that. I was reading up on the ROTC programs and some things are not clear to me that maybe you could help me with. On the afrotc website, it says there is a 2 year and a 4 year program. For the 4 year, you first do the General Military Course, then the Professional Officer Course. It also says "once you have enrolled in the Professional Officer Course, you are enlisted in the Air Force Reserve and assigned to the Obligated Reserve Section." Does this mean that you go through basic training after the 4 years? I am also worried that I may not be accepted because for my 1 year of college my grades were not the best or do they base it on your high school career?
