quote: NOW: Who lied to be nominated ? Who lied to get Elected ? Not Lincoln. His primary goal at the time was to preserve the Union. Who was telling the truth ? "Honest" Abe. He always was against slavery. However, he would not go to war to abolish it. When war came, abolition became a military issue in that encouraging slaves to leave the south or even fight for the North would help end the war. AS they say. You can't argue with History. It depends on who's doing the telling. That reminds me. Someone here once said that Lincoln was killed to keep him from talking. They never said what it was that the president was supposed to be kept from talking about. Not mentioned at all was the fact that the vice president and secretary of war were also targeted. Maybe Dave can tell us...

This is a small thing but one that has amazed me for years. He was known as HONOST ABE from Illinois. He was born in Kentucky, Moved to ohio then Indiana. His parents came to the land of STINKIN when he was 8 or 9 but he was Honest ABE. Never told a lie. Then again, I could be wrong.

There is an element of myth here. When Lincoln was killed he became a martyr with all that entails. Is it true that he never told a lie? I doubt it any more than I believe everything "Tricky Dick" Nixon said was untrue. While I view the 16th president as an honest man, I file the "never told a lie" in the same file as the "Washington and the cherry tree" story. Now Washington could never tell a lie. "Then again, I could be wrong." OLDAO Certainly the "STINKIN" part. I believe the honesty ledgend refers to the fact that when young Abe borrowed books he always returned them.

Scooter, I agree with you. I lived in Illinois for three years. Have an ancester who lived in New salem. Abe was basicly an honest man when you held him to it, but not above stretching the truth. A historian once told me. Abe would never lie to you. He might tell you the truth 27 different way's but he'd never lie.
