I'm aware of the draft riots in NYC and the payment for substitutes; but does anyone know of a location listing accounts of draftee's service during the Civil War? I've read that many of the substitutes deserted and collected payments again and again. I've done a number of internet searches but haven't found any first hand acounts of those who finished their term of service.
The only way I know of would be through letters home, logs and any type of ledger of their accounts as a conscript. A lot of men didn't write about this is they were ashamed that they didn't volunteer for service. Being conscripted was a dishonor to the family and to manhood of that day. You might trying the local historical societies and maybe civil war round tables. Good Luck
