"You cannot make soldiers of slaves, or slaves of soldiers. The day you make a soldier of them is the beginning of the end of the Revolution. Ans if slaves seem good soldiers, then our whole thery of slavery is wrong"
Howell Cobb, one of the founders of the C.S.A, protesting Gen'l Lee's proposal to enlist slaves into the Confederate army near the end of the war.

One problem, the Arizona Territory wasn't formed until 1863. (I live in Prescott, the territorial capital.)

Gold was discovered in this area, most of the miners were Southerners. To hold the area in the Union, Lincoln split the New Mexico territory creating the Arizona territory.
The original plan was to split the New Mexico territory on a East-West line(like the Dakotas and Carolinas) not the North-South line that ended up being used.

As a funny aside, the Army was detailed to establish the capital "at a suitable location on Granite Creek in the vicinity of Thumb Butte."

So, they did. Only problem was, they established their camp at the wrong butte. They missed their destination by more than 20 miles.

Each year, the folks who live near Del Rio Springs celebrate the brief period the capital was there.

General R.E. Lee's farewell to the Army of Northern Virginia.

After four years of arduous service, marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources.

I need not tell the survivors of so many hard-fought battles who have remained steadfast to the last that I have consented to this result from no distrust of them; but feeling that valor and devotion could accomplish nothing that could compensate for the loss that would have attended the continuance of the contest. I determined to avoid the useless sacrifice of those whose past services have endeared them to their contrymen. By the terms of the agreement officers and men can return to their homes and remain until exchanged.

You may take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the consciousness of duty faithfully performed, and I earnestly pray that a merciful God will extend to you his blessing and protetion. With unceasing admiration and devotion to your country and a grateful rememberance of your kind and generous consideration to myself, I bid you all an affectionate farewwell.

The Dread-Scott dission was made in 1852. John (Osowatomie) Brown with his sons and followers attempted to take over the Armory at Harpers Ferry, Va. To which R.E Lee would command federal troops including Lt J.E.B. Stewart in retaking the armory fire house from John Brown and friends. In next couple days John Brown would be the guest of honor at a "Grand Necktie Party"
