27 May 1863 Wednesday-First assult on Port Hudson,Banks Federal force of about 13,000 made its first assault on 4500 Confederates under Gen. Gardner.The Federals including some black troops failed along the entire lines.Federal casualties were 293 killed,1545 wounded, and 157 missing for a total of 1995.Confederates total was about 235.

26 May 1862 Monday-Confederates extend their Trans- Mississippi Department to include Arkansas,Missouri,west Louisiana and Texas.

28 May 1863 Thursday-From Boston the Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts Volunteers left for Hilton Head South Carolina.It was the first Negro regiment sent from the North.

29 May 1864 Sunday- The Army of the Potomac marched toward Richmond south of the Pamunkey,meeting little opposition.But Lee,a bit farther on,was preparing his lines.

30 May 1864 Monday-Grant was now nearly as close to Richmond as McClellan had been in 1862 but again the Confederates barred the way.Fighting was heavy as the Federals felt the Confederate line,determing where it lay.John Hunt Morgan was on his way to Kentucky.

1 June 1862 Sunday-Battle of Seven Pines or Fair Oaks-Confederates losses were 980 lilled,4749 wounded,and 405 missing for a total of 6134 casualties out of about 42,000 effectives.Federals were 790 killed,3594 wounded,and 647 missing or captured for a total of 5031 also out of a total of 42,000 engaged.

2 June 1865 Friday-confederate General E.Kirby Smith at Galveston officially accepted the surrender made 26 May at New Orleans.

5 Jun.1864 Sunday- Confederates under W.E."Grumble"Jones moved to stop Hunters destructive raid in the Shenandoah.Jones with about 5600 men met Hunters main force of around 8500 at piedmont.the federals routed the Southern troops.Jones was killed in the engagement.

At Brandy Station 8000 sabers flashed and horses pranced as Jeb Stuarts cavalry spread in review along the railroad track,displaying their colorful movements to the assembled dignitaries and their ladies in carriages and in cars on the railroad.

It funny that you should mention this as I found out a secret when I went down to that area once for a fund raiser. It was in my days of doing JEB Stuart that I had the rare honor and priviliege of standing on the actual ground where the review took place. I was taken there by the person who is a direct descendant of the family who owned the land at the time, and still owns it today. Read that statement and think about what it says. If you come to a different conculsion, You are right!
Anyway............8 June 1861 The US Sanitary commission is founded.
Then in 1862 the Battle of Cross Keys, Virginia is fought with a resulting CSA victory.
In 1864, in Baltimore, the National Union Convention (Republicans) nominate Lincoln for a second term with Andrew Johnson as his running mate.

9 Jun 1863 Tuesday- The Battle of Brandy Station.Stuart vs Alfred Pleasontons cavalry.The southern cavalry had met its match.Federals had a total loss of 866,the Confederates had a loss of a total of 523.
