Wall Mart wants to build a super store with in one mile of the Battle of wilderness site. The store will be a 138,000 SQ.FT. super center. Wal Mart said :WE recognize the significance of the site, but we are not building on the Battle field. Local leaders want the $500,000.00 in tax revenue per year that will be generated by the store. : I wonder how many years the T.I.F. that they gave wal mart is for.

As long as they aint buiding on the battlefield.I will be OK with it.I hate it when they destroy battlefields just to make a buck. Not just Wally World but anybody.Ive been to several battlefields and it really does something to a person just to walk on that hallowed ground.

The artical was in the Kansas City star this morning. It sounds as tho about half of the Battleground has been developed. Now some one wants to jump on wal mart. it's still sad the way the Battle fields are being taken over.

It breaks my heart knowing a piece of American history is going away by a dozers blade.I agree with you Thrust, but where can we buy stuff thats not made in China?Ive been working at Lowes for almost 4 years now.95% of the stuff that comes in says"country of orgin China".About the only thing not made there is lumber and it comes from Canada.I work on the stock crew and see everything coming into the store. We have to be able to find American made goods before we can buy them. And I do check it out before buying.

We are gettting off subject here but with good cause. I bought two ball cap's at an ACE hardware store while my son was home on leave. One Navy & one Army. When we put them on my son said: Dad look where they are made: VIET NAM.

Wal-Mart in the Wilderness Why? Isnt there enuff of the bloody stores already? Thats just as bad as when Disney was looking to build a theame park at Bull Run / Manasas. Which was stoped. The people now a days could give a S**T
less about saving history they want to make money. So I'll plagorize a statement thats been plagorized " A nation that forgets its history is doomed to repeat it". A civil war today in this country I dont want to even think of the % of casulties.

People get weird when it comes to Walmart. Would so much fuss be raised about Sears? Taco Bell? Suzi Wong's Massage Parlor? Those, or similar businesses, are probably all located in the vicinity and closer than the mile away the Walmart will be. But Walmart is evil.

The town I live in has a development agreement for a large shopping center. Three Safeway employees sued the town over the agreement with Walmart. It cost the town over $500,000 to defend the agreement.

There was no problem with Kohl's, Home Depot, Cracker Barrel or any of the other store being built in the center, including Sam's Club(how's that for hypocrisy, sue over Walmart but not Sam's Club).

Later, after the suit was dismissed, it was disclosed, a union out of Phoenix had paid all the legal fees to file the suit.

There is no that not much left of the the Wilderness area to call it that any more. The neighborhood kids and young adults use the battlefield parking lot as a local lover's lane. Its surrounded by bushes and trees to be hidden from the main road.
Beautiful area, some of it still is, but it was very developed eight years ago, I'd hate to see it now.

Daarryl is correct. The Battlefield is for all intence and purpose gone. I was there many years ago. At that time I don't think there was one square mile of it left that hadn't been developed. I may be wrong about all this but the CIVIL WAR PRESERVATION SOCIETY is not doing the job the way it should be done,It may have somthing to do with finances. I hate it but what can be done? Nothing?

Unfortunately, "emminent domain" will rule for Walmart and we need to address the law that will ultimately cause the good guy to loose.

Eminent Domain was to enable the goverment to aquire land that was needed for what ever project was at hand. Now through "by hookery & crookery" (the supreme court), the government can declare Eminent Domain, Take your land and sell it to a 'for profit" corporation such as Wal Mart, Home Depot,ETC, ETC. with no recourse by the land owner. Tha is my understanding. I could be wrong.
