I'm trying to identify a compass that might be from the Civil War, it was found in an old Civil War era home that was being demolished over 60 years ago, near Chattanooga, TN. It was discovered in the basement along with two pistols, one of them had the text "A. Waters, Milbury MS, 1837" on it. There is no text on the compass except for the letters N,S,E & W, the arrow at the top can freely spin. The base measures 5" x 5":

The letter's N.S.E. & W. are obvious, north,South,East & west.. This was probably an early weather station The arrow would point into the wind and the compass would tell the direction it was from. The item could have had a thermomater & barometer with it. Not much help. Hope you find out more |
