Being from Alabama I would have to defend my state agenst the Union although it would have been a painful decesion ...I compare the Union and my home state to a mother and a mother in law ... the state is my mother, she gave me birth..nourisehd me ...raised me and I love her ..the union is my meddling mother in law related only by marriage and I am fond of her but blood is thicker then water ...so when it comes down to choosing I would have to choose my state..MY blood ...

Thank you Dave ...I just explained it like I think I would have felt given the choice ...being from Alabama I can relate ...I have grown to like western Kentucky ...beautiful country ...lot of heritage ...good people ...but its not Alabama ..its not home ...I am the Gen. Sales Manager for the Harley store here and really enjoy what I do ...so I suppose I will stay here until I retire ...

Well bing from Vermont originally I would have no problem fight for a strong Federal government. However I now live in Florida and have been trying to figure out just what exactly I would do if I had been here in 1861.
I love Vermont and my family that is still there. However I have chosen to live in the South. My home is now Florida and if I had to I would defend my new home. I can identify much more with the Southern soliders of 1861 when it comes to the outrage of the Federal government coming down here to tell me how to live. I understand the belief of the states' rights ruling over a stronger Federal government.
All of that being said it would be like pulling teeth for me to fight against the United States. I was a solider in our army and I swore an oath to defend our constitution so going back on that would be a hard day for me. However in the face of an invasion I would defend my homeland, Florida.

I would have fought for the SOUTH. I believe in states Rights. After reading several book on the slavery Issue I came to the conclusion that had cooler heads prevailed and the North used common sense slavery would have been a thing of the past by 1875. The issue could have been settled by other means than war at that time. Now having the benefit of history I would liked to have served with Gen. JOSEPH SHELBY or Gen. PATRICK CLEBURNE the choices are many. GEN. Jackson's Foot Cavalry would not have been a bad choice. Had I the misfortune to fall under the control of the union army I would have given my oath to and life for GEN. J.L. CHAMBERLAIN.

Travis, How would a Squid QM/BM get an M-1 thumb`? At the time you were in the only time you seen one was during boot camp. Possibly at camp Edwards. Am I right? Then again,I could be wrong.
