I am curious as to how the dental portion works if surgery is needed. I have TMJ disorder and due to my age, it has been recommended not to waste time and money on braces (which I had before and did nothing for my problem and insurance will not cover anyway)
It was recommended to just do the surgery but I was Active Duty at the time getting ready to go to Saudi Arabia so that was out of the question. I am still waiting for Tricare to send me my enrollment package for dental coverage for my son and I (Seriously, I have enrolled online about 3-4 times now and NEVER receive anything)
What I am basically wondering is how the insurance works for surgery for ortho. Is it covered by medical, or dental? Has anyone here had surgery for TMJ disorder?
I would contact the dental part to see if things have gone through or not. I know they had a rule a few years ago that if you didnt have at least 12 months left on the service members enlistment, then the eligibility would not show. As for how it works with TMJ, I'm dont know how it goes or how its billed. I hope someone has the answer or experience with it.
I would think it would be similar to them covering having wisdom teeth out. They cover a portion and you cover the rest. This is just a guess, so don't quote me on it.
Surgery to correct TMJ is medical not dental. I had a friend that had to get this (she would pass out driving down the highway). It was done in a hospital as a medical procedure.
