I'm pretty sure it depends on the board they'll hold for a medical discharge. He can get nothing, or he can receive a certain % of coverage that allows him to keep insurance. But I also think that depends on his medical issues being related to service - if they're not, I think you get nothing. My knowledge about that is third hand though, so I'm not totally clear on the process.
I was just in a post deployment briefing last week and the VA came and spoke with the troops just home. From what I understood, If your husband has been deployed to any war zone in his career, he is entitled to free care through the VA when he gets out of the military. You not so much. But he will be.
They said they have moved towards free care for Vets across the board, because its hard to tell what is service related and what isn't anymore.

your tricare will end the day he gets out- they may extend it up to 180 days depending on the code they give him- or you can get the Cobra insurance at 666 a month for up to 18 months.
