Let me clear some air here...I had gastric by pass in 2006 in Temple texas outside of fort hood texas. In fact me and my best friend both had it a day apart. I weighed 347 at 6 ft tal. she was 360 at 5'7. i then lost 90 percent of my weight in the first 8 months. Mind you to get gastric by pass from day of talkin to my Primary Care Manager to day of surgery to date 6 weeks. They pumped us both out fast no longer needing trails upon trials of diet research. Nor tons of counceling. I did amazing the first 8 months until I had wisdom teeth cut out and the medicines they prescribed me burnt a 1.5 inch whole in my gastric pouch. I had to have emergency surgery that day, I almost died and in result hospitilized for 15 days. I wasnt allowed to drink or eat for those days and they thought I would never be normal again. I wsa 23 years old at the time. I had the feeding tube for 3 months on rigourous tube feeds and my life was miserable. My husband after all that got sent to iraq after recovery. We got stationed at fort campbell. And after getting down to my low of 193, which doctors wanted me at 180 because of my height I looked into tummy tucks. I got and Abdominal plasty at gateway medical center in clarksville tn... TRICARE DIDNT CARE ABOUT SKIN RASHES BACK PAINS EXERCISE ECT. HERES WHAT THEY LOOK AT. The base the surgery on your quality of life. If it will effect you or enhance your quality of life. You hear of desparate women using bleach pens on their excess skin to help improve. It had nothing to do with it. Its all a quality of life issue same as when u get ur gastric or lap band. My friend who had the surgery the day before I did has suffered extreme ulcers and pouch issues. She had over 14 scopes in the 2009 year. Shes now been thrown to so many pain management doctors and bogus surgeries in Nashvilles leading hospital Vanderbilt...the final option they had given her was fentynol. Which they tell her is the strongest narcotic to man. Shes now spending days in Out patient rehab like some crackhead on the street. She literally foams at the mouth when coming off the doses and is still in abundent pain. She went to the same doctor I did she tried the rashes and skin. She was heavier then I was and shorter but tricare would not approve her surgery for a tummy tuck, Pictelectomy or abdominal plasty, in her eyes she is disgusting and suffered and I admit her skin is like if she gave birth to triplets in the stomach. But tricare doesnt see that smaller amount of skin effecting her quality of life. Day of my abdominal plasty they took of 9 pounds of excess fat and skin. That doesnt seem like much but an average woman goin into surgery maybe sheds 2 pounds of skin and fat. My skin was down to my mid thighs and it was nasty. I had that surgery december 19th I believe of 2007, I entered the hospital on the night of new years eve...I had been bleeding out of my belly button and been to 2 different ERs they saw nothing wrong with me or my new surgery. I finally was in thekitchen getting a bottle of water and we heard a loud snap. My husband looked over as I was passing out in the floor. My man made belly button they had given me weeks before detached from my stomach and I started bleeding. I rushed to the ER once again, I had a golf ball size abses in my stomach and my stomach new skin they stretched down had detached. I went into emergecy surgery went through all the pain again, awful 119 staples from hip to hip. Let me explain one thing. I would do all this over again because I hated being huge and unhealthy, however I almost died 2xs and suffered. DO CHECK AND I CAPITALIZE THIS...TRICARE WONT AUTHORIZE PLASTIC SURGEONS BOARD CERTIFIED. wE THEN learned that my surgeon was nothing of a just general surgeon thats how tricare passed it by with out me paying out of pocket anything. and lemme tell u this, when u get a tummy tuck or abdominal u think finally i will have that flat amazing stomah no rolls no sag. u have flat accept ur sides are left fat and flabby,u have weird scaring thats almost embarable to find clothes. you thought u had a muffin top when u wore jeans it only gets worse. Tricare wont cover full belt lifts where they cut all around from back to a lil minus ur front. I have an email if anyone would like to message me or see pictures. I am also running for missplusamerica.com ohio division Amanda. Check me out or email me XXX thats also my messenger. One thing I would like to add since all of my surgeries since 2006 i have put on 60 lbs. which hasnt been my fault I diet do everything they say and its some how linked to that 1st life saving surgery. I am now goin to try and get tricare to pay for lap band since i had such awful complications so wish me luck if anyone knows or has had gastric the lap band becuase of complications NOT bc of over eating I would love to hear back also.

I think its kind of a good thing to have to go through a process to get cosmetic surgery. I know I will have to. I lost weight with clean eating, excercising (stregnth and cardio) and cuting sugar, salt, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and enriched breads out of my diet. Including fast foods. If I go out I research everything before I go. Now, I want a tummy tuck. I have extra skin on my belly I cant get rid of, but might be able to get cosmetic surgery because of how they took DD out of my belly when she was born. I'll be trying to start that process here soon (if I can). I've already been told by my PCM that its the only option for me.
Anyone out there heard of seperated stomach muscles due to pregnancy and what tricare is willing to do to FIX the problem? My oldest is turning four and youngest two. I developed an umiblilcal hernia during my third trimester with my second and about six months after having him had my gaul bladder out and the hernia repaired. I went to an appoinment here on base (ft. bliss, tx) and told the dr. about the pain in my belly and i thought my hernia had came back through the previously sewn muscle. while feeling for the hernia she discovered the two inch seperation in the muscle. I told her it had been there since the second trimester of my first pregnancy and asked what it meant and what to do! She said she wasnt sure but pt (pyshical therapy) 9/10 times did NOT work and tt (tummy tuck) was almost gauranteed but she knew of patients with worse cases (intestins bulging) and plastic sugeons still wouldnt touch it. Hence leaving me with absolutely NO ANSWER! I am desperate. Doing research i have discovered this issue has caused my lower back pain, horrible posture, and to boot i cant do excercise to loose to weight i am gaining from non-activity due to pain from the hernia, back, and strain i feel just bending over or picking up my babies! I have done lots of research on this topic and frankly im very discouraged! This SHOULD be medically necessary i would think! Seeing how i am not over weight and my belly is the ONLY place that there is any extra weight if thats what you call it. Gonna make an appt. again and demand some type of answers/second oppinion! Anyone out there in the same boat??
As with any surgery, the first thing that you need to do is go back to your PCM for a referral to a specialist (I'm not sure who would be the first to see - a gasteroenterologist comes to mind but not entirely sure). From there, you get an opinion/recommendation from the specialist and you can try to get authorization from Tricare for the procedure. Take it out of their (PCM's)hands and into the person who would make a medical recommendation.
If the surgery is just to fix the muscles then a general surgeon could do it. If it involves a tummy tuck then you might need a plastic surgeon. As NWIP stated, get a referral from you PCM to the surgeon and then let them decide that it is a medical necessity. If the surgeon makes that determination then Tricare should have no issue paying for it.
Hello, I am stationed in Virginia, with my husband and I am looking into a TT, due to having 3 children and weight loss. I have read lots of input on the opinions and results of some of you ladies' procedures and I am interested in pursuing this procedure.
I am not familiar with some of the abbreviations used here so can someone tell me where I should start?
We just transferred here this month and I have not met my new doctor yet, as im sure thats a good starting point, but I want to start with the right doctor, someone who is familiar with these steps and someone who will understand my issues.
I had a tubal ligation back in 2006, and I have longed for a TT but I dont know where to start. Any advice would be really helpful.
My biggest issue with this is why do Fat lazy people who can't exercise to lose wieght, but can recieve a free surgery and then tummy tuck. Women who had complications during pregnancy and had to have a C section can not get approved for a tummy tuck to fix issues with the scar. Hrmmm, sounds like more useless, wasteful, ****bags using the system for personal gain. Get off your lazy ass and do something, especially if your spouse is military, unless they are fat too.

1) Where you are getting the idea that they can get these types of surgeries is beyond me. In order to qualify for any surgery including weight reduction and tummy tuck afterwards is a LONG process and requires months even years to go through after a recommendation by their doctor. It isn't something they walk in Tuesday for and have it done by Friday. Your comment was not necessary. You do not know the conditions they are in, so I suggest you do that before jumping to conclusions.
2) The Original Post was in 2008 and things have changed since then and constantly changes.
