Hi Everyone~ My wife will be graduating basic on July 25, then shipping off to Monterey DLI after that. I am 34 years old, and neither of us wants to have children. Ever. So, does Tricare cover the surgery? I have searched the Tricare site, and I saw that "surgical sterilization" is covered in both men and women, but I keep finding this information in conjunction with cancer. I don't have cancer, I just want to be sterile. I know there should be much counseling to make sure we want this, and that's quite alright, I just want to know if it is covered, and ANY other info pertaining to it that someone might have. It would be incredible to hear from someone who had the same situation and resolved it, but anything you can share that is absolutely reliable I would greatly appreciate. We have both thought long and hard about this, and there is no doubt whatsoever that this procedure is for us. Can it be done? Thank you all in advance, Jason Comeaux ex-Navy, current Navy husband

yes it is covered. HOWEVER.. because you don't currently have kids, you may face an uphill battle getting it approved. Dumb rule, but apparently too many people 'change their minds' ten years down the road. your age helps, though. depending on your spouses' age you get lucky and find somebody willing to sign off on it without too much hassle. and good for you for knowing what you (don't) want! I am childfree too and don't regret it one second. have fun in Monterey.. I miss it....especially Archie's and Taste of Monterey. be advised that Monterey is Prime REMOTE.. there are NO medical facilities for dependents there. so you will be seeing a civilian for all your care.

My DF actually had his vasectomy while he was deployed down at GTMO. Everything was covered as Mrsjvb said. I commend your decision as well. Good luck.

It can depend on the base and the state. Some they will require a counseling and both partners to be there, other areas they don't. We didn't have to do anything when dh had it done years ago.
