I invite you to visit the Health and Fitness Discussion Boards. There you will find links to my website with several articles that may help you. It is an established fact, most VA doctors are trained to deal with the specific issues of veterans, much more so than the general physicians in private practice. If you have had VA doctor problems, you can use VSO's to assist you in getting a doctor who will be able to communicate with you on a better level. I will cast no stones! Dave Barker |

Sure doesn't seem like a year ago that we were taking that long, sad walk to Colonel Hackworth's final resting place. It sure didn't do much for my Drill Sergeant image to be standing there fighting back tears at Present Arms while Taps was being played.
I consider that day to be one of the most important of my life. I wouldn't have missed saying goodbye to the Colonel for all the tea in China. The Army/Military lost it's strongest supporter last year. There will be others to take up the fight, but none will ever measure up to the standard that Colonel Hackworth set for us all. There's hardly a day goes by that I don't find myself thinking "I wonder what Colonel Hackworth would say about that? I bet he's kick their asses". |

A word for those that can not say farewell. We are those that served the Colonel in combat. Be it in Korea or Vietnam, being under the command of "Hack" was a life changing expierence.
Hack, as his friends and fellow warriors were admonished to call him in civilian life, was a very calm and reasuring figure when seen on and off the battlefield. Having served on Hack's 101st Airborne, 1st 327 Inf. Company B Scouts as a sniper, I can say that on the ground, a great clam came to us when we were able to say "The Eagle is up". This was Hack in his chopper above the battlefield. Once hack had a handle on the battlefield deployment, he was on the ground and going to the sounds of the guns. This dependable response from the Eagle always turned the tide in the battle. For those of us privledged enough to have seen Hack manuvere across the battlefield with his men, we will never say farewell ... for he lives in our hearts. Scoat the Scout from South Dakota |

Hack, you'd been writtin' much on the change of our Army, the Leadership, Itz awsome.! It'd be intresting to hear your take of the old NCO Academy, PLDC; being KNOWN AS THE WLC, Haven't heard much, but if itz being conducted, thumbs up!
Our newly appointed Officers, are being trained much more realistic, something I'd believe you'd throw KUDOS. BRAC is a smart move, though early comments on the transiton of the AR guys with the USAIC is gonna' work. The tactics you partcipated and set the trends of 'we were Soldiers", those that followed in that same theatre and beyond have come out and some have said their humble expierences. Though I'll be partial to the ACR, BLACKHORSE, Starry, Schweitzer, and Franks (VII Corps). RIP Colonel. SALUTE! This message has been edited. Last edited by: daCAT, |

Dennis, you were just a Lt. then, but you had status other Lt.'s didn't have, being the leader of the LRP Tiger Platoon. That was some day at My Canh II. I was with B Co. 1st 327 Inf. We were North of you, and the river (Bong Son?). Hack wanted to know where the extrem right flank of the enemy was, that we had encountered just an hour before. We were the first Platoon hit that day, and half of our men were pinned down behind burial mounds by a Chinese machine-gun. Sgt. Flecher, Riggs (Radio man) and myself were told to find that right flank of the enemy. That put us on a journey that will never leave me.
Your Tigers pulled Sgt. Flecher out of the river before you crossed. Riggs and I were fighting for our lives on the other side of the river. From that position we could see four of your Tigers pull out Sgt. Flecher. With Riggs severly wounded, a round through his PRC-25 (we could recieve, but not send,) low on ammo, our Sgt. running out on us, and an air strike on it's way, the pucker factor went up ten points. When you crossed Tiger Field, Riggs and I were pinned down on the West side of that little hooch, in a shallow ditch, with a hedge row in front of us. This was in the South West corner of the rice patty. We had seen over 150 NVA move into My Chan II, and set up the positions that tore into your Tigers. All efforts to alert the CP were useless with the damaged radio. I poped up to warn all of you, and your M-89 man popped two rounds off at me, falling short. Then all hell broke loose. Even though Riggs lost the lower part of his left leg, but put forth one hell of an effort, and managed to stay with me, and defend our position. We had one dead NAV who had jumped right over Rigg's head. One more on the cement rice drying floor, and at least three inside the hooch, and one wounded up in the rafters. After we ran out of ammo and grenades, (we used up most trying to suppress the hail of rounds coming at all of you. It was no use. The NVA had fire superiority plus.) I managed to get Riggs to a spider hole down by the river. It was dark when I made it back to the CP. The joy of making it back inside our perimeter was offset by the fact that Doc Buel from Hawaii lay on his poncho with the death rattle. This is a short version of what took place from our point of view. I shared it with Hack the last time I saw him down in Columbus Ga., and he gave me his challenge coin, because he said the only way he let anyone go back out that night for Riggs, was to get volunteers. We had to cut them off at ten men. B Co. was a very tight group of troopers. Hack said, "Next time you get in touch with Dennis, you tell him this story; every story is a piece of the puzzle that is the fog of war." RIP Hack, and now I have carried out your last order to me. |

Your right on RONCO,
Col. Hackworth's CMOH is long over due. It's a shame that men such as Gen. Westmoreland allowed thier pride and politics to overshadow their judement in blocking the Col.'s well earned awards. Hack's Historic Noval "About Face" was too much realism for ol'Westy. The fact that Hack's CMOH would put him up there at the head of all American warriors, as the most highly decorated American warrior to date, and that includes Audie Murphy. Could there be a little WWII jealousy still hanging around? President Johnson was not too happy with the Hard Charger either. But that's politics, Same-o, same-o. It's a shame the rascals have to go to their reward, before Hack gets his due. I'll bet they were shaking in their booties when they heard that Hack was on his way up. A Bunch of us net-worked at Arlington when we said our good-byes to Hack, and now we are at a standstill as where to go in order to do all we can to help Hack get his CMOH posthumously. Those of us in the 1st 327 Inf. 101st Airborne, Vietnam 66-67 know full well that Hack earned every medal, and our hearts as well, while he was taking us through the Valley of Death, and geting many of us back home in one piece. I have no doubt that Hack earned every one of his medals above, and beyond the call of duty, as he did with us. Some of you know Hack never forgot a warrior's deed that he had personal knowledge of. That night at My khan II when I carried Riggs out of Tiger field, Hack was greatful. Thirty-three years later when we met again in Georgia, he gave me what he called "One of a Kind" his original challenge coin. I couldn't take it, but my wife did, and I am happy for that, because it will stay in our family, as the most prized possesion that it is. My wife let's me see it on Veteran's day. LOL Here is an official list of Hack's awards. Eat your heart out Westy. PS, I'll try to insert a picture of Col. Hackworth's challenge coin, in hopes that it will challenge each of us to do whatever we are able to see to, so that we don't go to our graves without Hack geting his rightful recognition. Above the Rest, and carry on, as we use to say in the 1st 327 Inf. ENTITLEMENTS OF COL. DAVID H. HACKWORTH (U.S. ARMY, RETIRED) AWARDS & DECORATIONS COLONEL DAVID H. I attempted to place the actual images of those challenge coins for about an hour. The best I could do is what is shown above; the link must be clicked on in order to view them. I have never encountered a problem like this before, thus I believe there is a problem in the PROPERTIES in those images. Sorry 'bout that bud. |

USMCVET, thanks for the help. The link took me to the Military.com Home page. I set up a photo account and the pictures went right up. I took those pictures with my Sony, so there no Copyright gizmoes embeded there. Everyone should be able to pull them up. Type in key words "hackworth, challenge coin, flipside or just click on this link. http://sniperscoat.photos.military.com/
Thanks again. Take care |
