Rex,
I don't know if you have ever seen William Burrows' book "BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY" which was originally published by Penguin Books in 2001 and has been republished with a new preface in 2002. This is the first book I have seen that talks about the crews and planes sent on these missions and lost to hostile action. I had heard bits and pieces of a few of these stories over the years but there sure were a lot more of them than most people ever suspected. Our government still does not say much about this kind of stuff. My son's in-laws both worked for NSA and they have their own lists of "Lost Heros" that no one has or will ever hear about. Just wanted to make sure you knew about this book. |

I don't think the Colonel will really be gone until we are all gone. He had the wildest and best forum on Military.com. Those who agreed with him, those who disagreed with him and those of us who simply wanted dialogue with him.
The Colonel used to exchange e-mails with me and fortunate for me, I printed a couple and saved them. He was born in Prestonsburg Kentucky. My grandfather and grandmother Hackworth were born in Prestonsburg Kentucky. Hmmmm... I will cast no stones! Dave Barker |

I cannot guarantee how long this thread will remain up here, but at least for now it's featured. Plus, it all depends how many posts it'll receive while it's here. Common sense has to be applied with this thread and what was said about the Colonel, there's really not that more to add. Remember, I'm only covering for Giant Bryan. This message has been edited. It is just my opinion and nothing else. Due to reasons you usmcvet most likely will agree with, I gave up moderating this forum because of Health and Fitness requires a lot of time when people are posting a lot.
This current lull will pass, when people get their heads turned back straight. Or new people will drift in and pick up the slack. These discussion boards were established originally to respond to the columns of Colonel David Hackworth. At the time the most decorated living Vietnam veteran. Since his death, we were allowed to keep our unique electronic family posting on the same off-subject topics we had been doing all along. We have had some colorful posters in the past who came and left. Some are Swann, Yogi, the Mays, 2SHRT or 2shrt, Bomingo all who either incited, or supported what we were doing, which was freedom of speech. Something the Colonel expressed quite frequently. After all, his interview in Vietnam, when he pin-pointed the reason the United States was not winning the war, is a shinning example. He said (paraphrased) "the problem is the Generals and the Pentagon," he was so right and ended his opportunity to be promoted, or receive the Medal Of Honor he earned. His freedom of speech was the most important possession he had. His words which were penned for us to read, would inflame the (L)iberal and (C)onservative alike. His critical comments about the troops, not being given the material they needed to win a war, have been found to be well grounded. Just as what he said about Vietnam Stars ego's and the personnel in the five side building was well grounded. Again it is an opinion, I feel I have earned mine as the Colonel earned his, far to many decisions on fighting a war are made for political party reasons, to suit the Dems or the Repubs. That has cost a lot of young lives during these unofficial wars of the past and this one of the present, with the overwheming amount of Americans simply not paying attention to it. To many "never been there, never done that" people make extremely deadly decisions about how to fight a war while ignoring the experiences of those who have been there and have done that! Colin Powell disagreed with the military options that were taken and thus left the administration. When people would comment on his leaving the in-crowd would accuse the speaker of Bush-bashing. That was pure and simple hogwash, we all have a right to question the motives of our leaders. Now Iran is a definate nuclear threat, who has stated Israel must be destroyed. So are we going to stand back and rattle our sabre and tell them they have so many months to prepare for us to come after them? Then watch a mushroom cloud? We allowed our enemy in Iraq prepare for the invasion, as the Colonel said in 2003 about this time of year. We gave our enemy, our plans and they prepared for us, they prepared well. The war is still going on today, after it was declared a victory in 2003. Now the question is: Are we going to wait on Iran to nuke Israel? Thanks for putting this thread back as a feature. I would not do it because I am not a moderator here any more, even though I am still a moderator elsewhere. It was and is not within what I will do. If we do not honor the memory of the man the Board is named after, well... I will cast no stones! Dave Barker |

RONCO deserved being the PCP (even Military.com) HOF long before now. Ron is a true veterans friend and has given much to this nation, Ohio and this forum. I am proud to see his name on the list. RONCO keeps the memory of his daughter alive in the minds of every individual who posts on this forum. That is good, very good. This keeps the people focused on what happens; to our troops, when they are exposed to envionmental poisons. The government simply buries their collective heads in the sand. Thanks RONCO... you are in my opinion #1 on Military.com I will cast no stones! Dave Barker |

I read some of his writings, contacted him on his address and got his return, and cried when he passed. I had only 10 months in-contry, but was a combat assult helicopter pilot. Lots of times getting shot at =warrior. My 3 sons served in araq, 1 in the war and a 1 year tour later--He'is my Hero.Hacks site should be kept up and running because it is very important to watch out for troops by any means available to us. My #3 son spent a year in Iraq protecting convoys out of Kawait to Scania for 6 mos then 6 mos out of Scania to Bagdad for 6 mos. He has his release from the Guard(WV) so he can go Active. Do you know how much it costs for a Guard Warrior to go onto active duty(with a wife). How about $3000 bucks. This is the type of thing that Hack would blast the Army with. WARRIORDAD#infinity.By the way, Hack is my #1 HERO.

Col. Hackworth definately put his life on the line in a couple of wars. We was highly decorated and respected. His dedication to making sure the troops had what they need to do battle is his most memorable trait. He died form cancer due to Agent Orange. If you have been following the news Tiger Woods father met the same fate. If you served in Vietnam or have a relative or friend that served you should check out www.silverrose.org. Many of our vets from the Vietnam era are falling every day due to the effects of agent orange. It is also affecting their children.

My admiration for Hack's legendary life knows no bounds. I am retired 0-6 and can understand the military's "Mustangs", even if I a product of ROTC. We have lost a real fighter.

I have been to the VA for special treatment since I came back from Desert Storm. It has been an uphill struggle to get the 10-point disability. Most of the VA doctors have never been to combat and do not understand our problems. Jerks !!
