Thanks. Hack was one-of-a-kind. I just got back from his funeral and I think he would be pleased, not only with the turn-out, but the laughter, old war stories, and picure-perfect day at Arlington.

I spoke with "Hack" on severla ocasions and always found him gracious, never condecendingand always on point. Even when I disagreed with him he was polite. His sense of humor and his sense of self were such that he could poke fun at himself without fear of ego deflation. He also always "promoted " me at least 2 paygrades upon an introduction! 'Til next post Hack!

Since the Colonel passed to his rewards, it seems as if no one has stepped in to pick up his torch. Even though all of us at one time or another, disagreed with his writings, equally all of us at one time or another, knew he was right on target regarding many of the issues.
The Colonel wrote his articles and books using his personal experience as his guide. It appears today's writers, do not have equal experience in the combat situations to equal David Hackworth. It also appears to me, that in the foreseeable future it shall remain that way.
He wrote of how wrong it was to threaten to invade Iraq, then wait. Then again threaten to invade, then wait. His critique was giving the enemy so much time to prepare for the attack. We did give them time, plenty of time. If there were WMD's the Iraqi government had plenty of time to remove them, or hide them.
Now the insurgents are killing and maiming our troops at a terrible pace. It appears (to me) the insurgents are the loyalists of the old Iraqi government and as Jackie Gleason once said "you ain't seen nuthin' yet!"

UNLESS YOU HAVE HAD YOUR VERY EXISTENCE THREATENED BY THE MISSION YOU ARE GIVEN, YOU CAN NOT POSSIBLY AGREE WITH THOSE OF US WHO SAY "THE ONLY WAY TO FIGHT A WAR IS FULL TILT" AND TO "WIN AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE".

IT IS MY BELIEF THAT IT IS MORE HUMANE TO ANNIHILATE THE ENEMY ASAP THAN TO HOPE TO CONTAIN IT OR CONTROL IT.

'wartime,' we in the military still had a few rights to criticize our leaders and their policies without being taken out and shot.

I was a participant in the 'Great Southeast Asian Wargames' from 1969-70 and was so highly
disallusioned by the moronic US military policies that were turing lots of draftees and
career pukes into hamburger that I decided not
to re-up.

"Why don't you want to re-up?" the major asked.

"Because, our tactics are terrible..."

Thank God for Hack.

Listening to a COL addressing a news conference via videotelecommunication last week, I was reminded of the times of the past when KIAs were reported with alleged inflated numbers of NVA or VC.

The report was very upbeat, positive and included many references of comparison to those statistics of 1 & 2 years ago, and how the casualty have decreased. But they've elevated, or merely skyrocketd to those of the civilan population and those defending them.

The interview continued with the COL indicating that those responsible were less skilled, and their tactics less sophiscated than those that had preceeded them a year ago.

Simply, less of our sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, sisters or brother were dying than a year ago. People are still dying but in greater numbers in their own country, and the 'war on terror' continues with the terroist raging war.

I believe Hack would've been impressed with the report by this COL, it was not eloquent, yet it could be. The real facts were given yet it was done professionally with honor and dignity, as one would expect.

When this thread was started it impressed me as a nice tribute to the Colonel. A thread befitting the officer and gentleman this Discussion Board was named after. There were several threads started upon the Colonels death, this one I felt was best. As such I clicked on "Feature" and it became a feature and stayed that way until recently. Someone took it off of feature with saying why. In my opinion the Colonel deserves a tribute for none of us agreed with him all of the time, most of us agreed with him some of the time and a few disagreed all of the time. However it brought a bunch of us together as electronic friends. I do not wish to see this topic die out. So I am asking you should it go back as a feature or just hang around, like some of the other threads that have nothing whatsoever to do with the Colonel or his writings.
