I can’t claim that I always saw eye-to-eye with Colonel Hackworth, but I always respected his military record and his obvious love of country. I am saddened by his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family as America lays another Soldier to rest.

God Bless the United States of America, and all who defend her.

This most likely isn't the appropriate time to ask, but what will happen to Col. Hackworth's Forum? I guess someone had to ask that question first.

God rest his soul. i did not agree with a good deal of his sentiment and comments, but one always knew his heart was in the right place. those reading "about face" and "hazardous duty" could learn much from him. he was an exceptional soldier in so many deserving ways.

Salute. What I admired the most about the Colonel, outside of being one of the toughest fighting men to ever wear the uniform, was his willingness to give us a place to post our opinion. My opinion today is that God needs to give the warrior a special place of rest and honour. God bless you Hack, and the Mrs.

While it is true that most of us have had our doubts and reservations with Col Hackworth's columns and public speeches, no one here has anything but the utmost respect for the performance record of one of our greatest combat leaders. Hack was definitely a "Soldier's Soldier" and his heart was always in the right place. The legacy left by his books on combat performance and leadership will live on long after his image fades away. The man knew how to fight and how to prepare and lead troops into combat and survive. That is a set of skills that are sorely needed in our military leadership now and in the future. There are such men in uniform now, let's hope they are allowed to stay in troop leadership positions and not shipped off and buried in some backwater staff office or shuffled out of the services. The "up-or-out" policy is not always a good idea. Either way you are losing great combat leaders.

Colonel Hackworth, I salute you and honor your memory as an advocate for all soldiers, an outstanding leader of men, an unflinching spokesman for the "common" man and non-commisioned officers of the US military.!

My deepest condolences to the family of one of the finest men to wear the uniform of the a US warrior!

Unlike many of those posting on this Discussion Board, I knew and communicated personally with the Colonel. I had deep respect for him as an elder and a person who presented his own mind. I have the deepest respect for his memory.

A fitting quote from the article 5/5/05: Washington, D.C., May 5, 2005 - Col. David H. Hackworth, the United States Army's legendary, highly decorated guerrilla fighter and lifelong champion of the doughboy and dogface, ground-pounder and grunt, died Wednesday in Mexico. He was 74 years old. The cause of death was a form of cancer now appearing with increasing frequency among Vietnam veterans exposed to the defoliants called Agents Orange and Blue.

Col. Hackworth spent more than half a century on the country's hottest battlefields, first as a soldier, then as a writer, war correspondent and sharp-eyed critic of the Military-Industrial Complex and ticket-punching generals he dismissed as "Perfumed Princes."

I will cast no stones!

Although we didn't always agree with you we respected you for your accomplishments and wisdom. We've debated your commentary but still respected what you stood for. We pray that the almighty places with your former troops to take command again. God bless you Col. you'll be missed. Granpappy22 Frown

All that can said that is good and honorable is that the Col. was a combat soldier proud of his CIB and of the men who served with him.
Pray that in the generations to come there will be other soldiers of his ilk..... we will need them.

One of my most treasured possessions from my many years in service is a picture of Colonel Hackworth with his arm around my wife holding his book. God bless you Colonel and may your spirit live on!
