I am being shipped out to basic in a couple of days and just trying to tie up some loose ends on my knowledge of what I'm getting myself into so I don't seem so ignorant going in... First question: Do you get to decide what weapon or weapon class you get to carry while overseas? (i.e. M16, M4, etc; or Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Support, etc.)

Second Question: Are you allowed to purchase your own weaponry and utilize it overseas? I have a feeling that's going to be a no, but I thought it was worth asking.

Third Question: Are you allowed customization to your liking/will or is it basically whatever they give you? (i.e. reflex scopes, standard scopes, NV scopes, green dot, lasers, etc.)

Final Question: I am currently coded as 18X so if there are any experienced 18X's out there could you answer this; are there any major differences in the equipment and/or weaponry that the SF's carry compared to standard army personnel?

I realize that these might seem like stupid questions and I would really like to make it known that I'm not one of those individuals joining the army thinking life is like a video game and that you can 'choose/customize' your own equipment, but these questions are one of the few big questions I have been left unanswered by my recruiter and I feel like it is necessary to find the answers to them. Thank you for what I'm sure will be a rapid response to my inquiries.

First: standard issue is the M16A4 or M4 carbine, mostly depending on your level of combat possibility (Infantry get carbine, cooks get A4 etc). You can request from your platoon SGT about what you would like to carry, but never count on it (except for the M249 or M240, these will get quickly issued to whoever actually wants to hump them around). Don't bet on a "sniper rifle", maybe the DMR though.

Second: .....no. It is a major violation of General Order #1. You can buy a nice knife and carry it, but many nice knives are available for issue.

Third: extra devices are available and can/may be issued to you.... but not necessarily what you want or need.

Final: not really. SF gets has more diversity in weapons choice or use, but normally use rifles and handguns of standard issue.

First you need to take off your active duty status from your profile. You are inactive reserve, when you enter into training and sign that final contract and raise your hand then you are apart of the AC.

There was a saying that my Drill Sergeants always use to say to us, This isn't Burger King and you can't have it your way. You will be assigned a weapon according to what your chain of command wishes, you can volunteer but that's about all.

No it is a violation to General Order #1, if you are caught you will face serious punishment.

It depends on the unit, most combat arms units issue out a sight (M68, ACOG, EoTech, etc.), IR laser and tac light. What you are issued will depend on your position in the squad.

Won't comment on this as I am not SF.

All right now that it's out of the way. First don't worry about what you will be issued, it's pointless from where you stand right now. Focus on your near term goals like passing OSUT, Airborne, etc. Also about learning your job, doesn't matter how much HSLD crap you got, you don't know your job you'll be **** canned and sent some where else.
