It would help if I included a photo of just what it is!

Confused

From the weaponry situated nearby, I'd say it's some kind of self propelled 'anti-tank' or possibly 'air-defence' weapon. I'd speculate of an Eastern design....possibly from the 70s/80s.

Can you tell us where the photo was taken??

London, UK in the late 1990s. At the Arsenal Artillery Museum I think.

Incidentally, do you know of any Forums that specialise in Artillery topics?

The cannon in question is a prototype "Green Mace" AA gun (UK design). It has a 4" bore diameter, and fires at a rate of 90+ rounds/minute. (Hence the water cooling system on the barrel.) 28 shells were carried on the mount (14 per drum).

One prototype was developed, and the weapon was never fielded in its final (5" bore diameter) form. As primitive as they were in the 1950s, antiaircraft guided missiles had rendered the concept obsolete.

The above was found using a websearch.
