81-83. good hard hitting round, never, NEVER had it jam on me. Once did the very bad of linking 4 100rnd belts together fired them all in one long stupid burst. Didn't clean it (sure made the Sarge mad) Took it out the next day and ammo ran through it like a dream. Easy to clean (compared to many), And at a 147lbs (at that time)I carried it without too much strain ( although the big power pro sgt could fire it one handed)
All the accolades I read about the M-60 is impressive . No wonder , however , since from the breach back to the butt plate it is an exact copy of the MG 42 . Army ordinance really fought developing this weapon because it was a weapon developed by the "evil" German scientist of the Adolph Hitler era . The MG 42 to this day , with its smooth bore barrel is still the best machine gun ever thought up . Along with the schmeisser , and the Strumgewehr MP44 . These were all weapons that could have saved lives in Korea but Army ordinance refused them because they were "evil" Nazi weapons . The CIA did pass around many schmeissers in the early days of Nam , A Russian mechanic took the MP44 and turned it in to the AK 47 . Mattel won out in America . They took away our M14's and gave us the Matel. It jammed and we got killed . You gotta love Army Ordinance comrade Putin .
You need to get a copy of Small Arms of the World, and read it. The M-60 strted out as a copy of the MG-42. But, it was "tweaked" the results were not the weapon it could have been. It is not an exact copy from the breech back. The MG-42 was not a smooth bore weapon. The AK47 is not a copy of the MP44.

Oh lordy. Are you people still making this shiite up as they go along? How much did you smoke today? What they hell are they teaching 4th graders these days?
What sort of BS history and experience do you claim, noob? Secret missions over Pigwannastan armed with only an MRE spoon and hemp BVD's? Infiltrated Sadr City in a Burka and took out Maliki all by yourself, then escaped in a gyrocopter over the fake volcano?
In what world do you think anyone believes any of your crap?
BTW, it's Ordnance....no "I".
Life ain't worth living, if ya ain't got a good cigar.
A few years ago, I found a book about Carlos Hathcock (sp), a highly decorated Marine sniper. In this book, he discussed his used of the M60 as a sniping weapon, and the use of a scope mounted by means of a specially-fabricated (or modified) scope-mount. I was surprised, as I hadn't thought that the M60 was that accurate at long range. Does anyone have experience at firing the M60 at long ranges such as Hathcock did, and what did you think of it's accuracy?
I carried "the Pig" for four years, never had a problem with it. I loved it, and still to this day would be glad to have it on my side.
For those who say the M-60 is crap, they either didn't take care of the one they had, or they don't know jack about it.
I'm familiar with the M-240B, it's a great weapon. Better than the Pig? In some ways yes...it's heavier barrel makes it more accurate, but that same heavy barrel makes it off balance and a b_tch to carry.
It's no accident that the USMC and the Navy Seals both opted to employ the M-60E3's and then M-60E4/Mk43's, long after the Army switched to the M-240B. The Pig, especially the upgraded one's are hard to beat in the Light Infantry role. Doubt my word, hump a 240B for a while, and get back to me.
