So if I did 8 yrs 10 mths with about 20 of those months being after 9/11, do i qualify? Also if I am already going to school, will my benefits automatically go up or do I get both GI bills? Last question, all my tution will be running out in or around Oct although my ten year mark has not hit. So will I still be able to receive tution now after Oct due to the new bill if you answer yes that I qualify?

As far as qualifying for the New GI Bill as of right now nobody really knows how it will work. I know they want to offer it to post 9/11 service members and Vets but someone in your circumstance, signing up prior to 9/11 has not been addressed yet. At least not that I have read. My guess is they will include you in it. But I think you will have to elect which benefit you want, the new or old MGIB. They are going to extend the time to use your benefit from 10 years to 15 years but the number of months you get, 36, probably will not change. Stay tuned, the Bill will be Law very soon.

I'm an Iraqi veteran that just medically retired after years of honorable service. Due to my lack of knowledege before my initial enlistment I denied the GI Bill, I tryed to buy it later in my career with no luck. Before my separation I was told that I could not buy it because of the code that I was retiring with. I would like to know if the Post-9/11 GI Bill can help me in any way to get this entitlement.

This is unfair treatment to Pre 9/11 veterans! The GI BILL should be retro to all veterans. Another case of preferred treatment to Iraq and Afgan vets.

Unless I read your profile wrong, it would not matter - you have been out of the service more than 10 years. "Chapter 30 GI Bill - Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty"

The number of years between the 10 year limit and the start date is very small. Most people who wanted to use the GI bill who are in the 3 year window that this creates between the time limit and the new benefit is small. Most have probably already used the benefit if they intended to use it. It is not just for war vets - it is for all vets on Ad during this period.

It is really upsetting that I served for ten years active duty, and another two in the NG and counting....I don't plan on getting out..but making a career of it, and I get nothing! It makes me sick that our government is placing a special mark on the heads of soldiers who did their job...I did and continue to do mine, so why am I any different than my troops that have gone overseas? I served two tours in Korea supporting Iraq, doesn't count....I have used all but 7 months of school benefits, and will get almost nothing but the monthly benefit when the same guys will be getting housing...I had to bust my **** to work full time, drill, and go to school full time on a lousy (but appreciated) 1500 a month. I want the same treatment and benefits for serving my country and still going strong...

If you are still Active Duty, then you will be entitled to the new benefit, but I do not know how the difference will apply since you only have 7 of your 36 months left. Like I said, you must wait until the rules are written to figure out how they apply.
