Hello, my name is Joey and I recently got out of Active Duty on March 31, 2008 and became a full time student in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. I am using the old GI Bill and did apply for FAFSA for the last semester. I both got the Subsidized and Unsubidized Loan. Then once I heard the new Post 9-11 GI Bill covers full tuition, plus BAH rates, and 1,000 for books, I became a happy camper. If it helps I attend Temple University whose annual tuition cost is $13,708. I plan to move out of my sisters home in the fall and perhaps sooner. With the new GI Bill, I will get a total benefit of $28,379 from the New GI Bill. As I check the tuition coverage it came up short. It will cover only $12,844 which leaves me with $864 as a difference. The extra $1,000 will cover books. Monthly Housing BAH is $1,615. The total housing cost for the entire year is $14,535. Considering those facts, is it wise to still apply for FAFSA?

Whether or not you apply for FAFSA is up to you. That said, the official info is not out yet on the new one so I'm going off the old info for this year's FAFSA. Also depends on if your school "double counts" your GI Bill against you. Are you sure tuition coverage is even that high? According to the info out now, it's based on in-state public university costs for the state you're in and when I applied to Penn State tuition wasn't that high.

I based my calcutions on the new gibill website and the annual tuition. Who knows it may change. The new GI Bill may cover it.

I would still apply for FASFA as you may still qualify for Pell Grants. Never turn down free money. lol.
