Airborne won't limit his options at all. All it will do is allow him to be stationed a few places he ordinarily wouldn't. Airborne qualification doesn't automatically mean you will be assigned to an airborne unit/post. All it means is that you are qualified to be assigned to one. Alaska, Fort Bragg and Italy are all places he could end up on jump status. But he could get assigned anywhere in the Army and not be on jump status.

I graduated AIT at Fort Sill Dec. 11. Just got back home for HRAP. If you get through Airborne school your getting stationed with an Airborne unit. I volunteered for airborne but missed it by 2 situps. Now i'm glad i missed it. Bad news.....He's gonna be there awhile waiting for a slot for Airborne school. My classes Airborne slots were gonna maybe come open between March - June. He's gotta be c 1/78. Tell him good luck with sweeping the drill pad, and picking up cigarette butts at the smoke shack...LOL

Here ya go. Living conditions suck, no free time, only classes and formations, chow sux basic training chow was much better ( delta 1\40 4th plt Wolfpack grad date Oct. 5, 07 ) Tell him to try and save money. When we first get out of basic training we tend to go but wild and blow everything we have. And 85% of Airborne gets stationed at Bragg, 2% Italy, 5% Alaska, and the rest get lost in paperwork. LOL....(that's actualy a perty close estimate I think) I'm getting stationed at Fort Campbell. 101st baby.

Read the question before you reply. Im going to AIT as a prior service Marine, not going to boot camp. Im not going to be an IET soldier neither is the ladies husband that started the thread, like you were. You said you missed by 2 situps? so you didnt pass the APFT or are you test different if you tryin to go airborne? Thanks for your input.

hey cpl jason, for prior service its no sweat. he stays off post here with me, goes to class, doesn't pt or do details with the iet guys. drives to class, etc. pretty much like a permanent party staff. he is loving he class, though. we will still be here until feb, let us know when u get here(he was doc to 2nd fssg out of lejeuene and sometimes misses the marines)!

[QUOTE]Originally posted by cpljason: You said you missed by 2 situps? so you didnt pass the APFT or are you test different if you tryin to go airborne? [QUOTE] The standard to pass the APFT is 60 pts in each event. The standard at the Basic ABN Course is 70 pts in each event. You have to show up with a PT card that shows this, even though I think they normally give you an APFT there. I had a 4 training day ground week, because I started on Tues, 5 Jul- my class did not take an APFT.

I'm going to say it again for the confused private. Just because you graduate airborne school doesn't mean you're going to an airborne unit. Do you have any idea how many people are in my unit that have graduated from airborne school but have never been to a unit on jump status?

There is nothing better than being an Airborne 13F. I was stationed in Italy in 95-98 as an F.O. It was a great time and my first duty station. Airborne FISTers ROCK!

1- Pay attention in BOLC 2, and go to ranger school if possible. You WILL deploy in support of GWOT, and chances are you will NOT be doing only FA stuff. Everything you can do to make yourself a better patrol leader will be beneficial. 2- Pay attention in BOLC 3 (OBC). You will be responsible to master your FA specific duties, even if you don't use them down range immediately. When we need artillery again, it is our leadership responsibility to have trained units ready. 3- Read FM 3-24 (COIN), and articles about what is going on downrange now. Your first assignment will most likely be as a CO Fire Support Officer, and you will probably end up helping your CDR manage the non-lethal stuff that COIN requires, and conduct the IPB to understand what is happening in his AO. 4- Listen to your NCOs- most of them will have multiple combat deployments, with tons of experience. Listen to them, understand what they are saying, and make the best decision you can at the time. 5- As an officer, you MUST be the moral compass of your unit. You will know what wrong is, and you are responsible to correct and/or prevent it. 99% of the time, your NCOs will support you, but don't let yourself go down for a bad apple. Good luck, and good hunting.
