I just got sworn in as a 13b last week in the Guard. Ive heard on numerous occasions that FA will eventually be phased out. Any opinions on that?

Im going ROTC soon after Im done with OSUT my recruiter says my enlisted MOS doesnt matter to what I branch into, with the way FA is changing is it a good idea to branch FA as an officer?

It will never happen.

It's just as likely that they would phase out armor or infantry. Hell, everyone's job could be done remotely by unmanned drones, right?

Pardon my sarcasm.

More likely, FA will reinvent itself into something more appropriate to modern warfare. Take Excalibur for example. If you could call up a precision arty strike within seconds from a direct support battery, rather than waiting around for the general support zoomies with their 500 lb JDAMs, who wouldn't want that? Plus, artillery is delivering 50 to 200 pound munitions, meaning less colateral damage. Seems like an excellent fit for today's battlefield.

Check these videos from Raytheon. That should answer the question of whether arty is still viable.

There's rumors that FA and ADA might be merged but I haven't heard anything about FA being phased out. I'm getting commissioned a 2LT in FA this May.

Field Artillery will always be a needed Combat Arm for as long as we have War. It may adapt to meet the modern battlefield, but none the less continue to be a necessary part of our Army.

Keep in mind that electronic warfare also falls into the fire support category.

When Hillary or Obama creates the Dept. of Peace and everybody hums a peace mantra, there will be no need for FA.

Yes and No.
There are a lot of liberals that want a Dept. of Peace and they would like to see the military phased out entirely.

It is more than that.
They truly believe that if the US only shows a loving peaceful face to the world everybody (like the Islamic extremists) will have to love us back.

This is their national security policy.

One name: Bill Clinton. That's who killed the military. It's taken a lot to get it back to where it is now.

Clinton, true. But it was Daddy Bush that started to undo all the great things that Reagan did in the 80s.

Daddy Bush had a Democrat controlled House and Senate. They screwed it up, as usual.

True, you know the top man always catches the flak. I didn't follow politics back then, too busy CMA. I just get sooo tired of seeing history repeating itself.
