Couple more weeks left of my AIT before heading to North Carolina's 18th Fires Brigade. Wondering if any of you have any info on what opportunities I can get to further my 13F training other than what I learned from AIT?

The best advice - and this goes for any MOS - is work to stay on top of the latest and greatest in your field, don't wait for the info to find you. For a Fister;
Explore FKN [Fires Knowledge Network] thru AKO. Every lesson taught in AIT, BNCOC & ANCOC and much, much more is in there including almost everything on your Critical Task List. Great refresher for yourself for the seldom used stuff and training material for your troops as well. Keep on top of the literature. Message to Observer and Redleg7 are good sources, as are professional pubs like the Fires Bulletin & the FA Association Magazine. Even if some stuff is technical and boring, understanding it will let you see the 'Big Picture' and what the FA powers that be are envisioning for your future. Take a look at where you want your career to take you. Consider schools, both FA and outside: Joint Fires Observer (JFO) is the latest and greatest for 13Foxes (good luck getting a slot) Battle Staff - always good, you'll find yourself suddenly working in a TOC someday and it's best not to look ignorant in front of a full bird. (experienced that one first hand) Technical courses: AFATADS, FBCB2, etc. always better than OJT if you get the chance. Gives you promotion points to boot. Other stuff: Nonlethal Weapons Instructor (MOS immaterial), ABIC (Army Basic Instructor Course) etc. Not only are you exposed to lots of different people and ways of doing things, today's Army can put a soldier of any MOS anywhere doing anything. |

Thank you Redleg13F. Some good info. Looks like I have a lot to study. Always good. Comming in the Army as a SGT I'm already behind the power curve, but I don't mind. Nothign I can't learn from some young Soldiers who know what they're doing. Don't bother me none. As far as a person of any MOS being put anywhere.. I'm all too familiar with that. Went to Afghansitan with the 1st ID as a Submariner in the Navy working at a COIN unit. Among other things.. I know what your tlaking about there! Either way, I have many questions to ask when I get to my next assignment and a lot to learn.

Well at 18th fires bde it'll probably be hard to get but if you make it to an infantry battalion sometime JFO is the way to go!!! Its a great course and it definatly sets you above the rest. Then of course there are some non 13F related schools like airborne and airassault, good times! And if you really wanna hate life for a few months there's ranger school. A 13F with a tab is pretty much untouchable

Hoping I can get JFO school while here. I could use the training. Unfortunatly my last ten years of military experience doesn't count for nothing here. Makes for interesting times.
