It's been lovely, but I have to scream now.

I am hoping that ther may be a chief or two that may be able to provide me a little insight in this area.

We are currently in MI while my husband finishes up recruiter duty. He is due to rotate in Dec., and we are selecting orders now. I am hoping to get the kids moved and settled for the start of the school year, and hubby will join us when his tour is up.

However, hubby is board eligible. If selected for Chief, could that affect any orders that he chooses now or would that just affect how his duties would play out at the new assignment?

Since his rate would still pretty much take us to the same area, no matter what, I am not terribly concerned, but still a little. Would hate to get all settled and then be told "Congrats on Chief! Oops, sorry, now you are going to the other coast."

Billets can generally go one up or one down on the paygrade. When I made Chief, I already had orders to a torpedo shop in Hawaii. My detailer called and told me that the shop was already overmanned with Chiefs and wanted to know if I would consider changing orders. He said he could still send me, but that it could hurt my chances for Senior.

Anyway, I changed orders, left three months later (my choice, I wanted to finish initiation at current command instead of tranferring into new command and going through where I didn't know anyone) and got a decent job outta the deal.

Working closely with his detailer at this time in the process is a must. Having him call the detailer and talk with him/her ASAP will help clear up some of your questions. Now, my community was rather small and the detailer was easy to work with. Not all are. But he needs to make that call and ask that question.

Good luck.

Chief--

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my post. DH says the detailer is awesome to work with, so I am feeling significantly better about making the move a little earlier.

Having moved around so much as a dependent child, I can aapreciate the strain it puts on kids. Our little ones are quite resilent, but we have a teenager. I would like to get her settled somewhere and let her finish high school in one place.

Thanks Again and thanks for your service to our great country!

No problem. Glad to help.

It is always a good thing when your detailer is easy to work with. Although, he/she may take the stand that "you are only a first class right now, so that's what we have to work with." But more likely it will be one of those "Let's cross that bridge when we come to it."

I fully understand the issues with moving the kids around too. When I retired, I promised my kids only one more move until they both graduated high school. That was over three years ago, we made that move and bought a house. But now it seems like we should be moving again!

Any way, pass my wishes of good luck to your husband and let me know how things go.

Regards,
Rod

Chief--

I know what you mean about the "three year and move" feeling. My dad is retired Navy and an AO--we seemed to move constantly! When I was able to stay in one high school I was thrilled!

This board will be the first to know after family if DH makes chief this year. Cool Keeping my fingers crossed that we can all celebrate together Beer

ATWIFE,

How many times have your husband been up for Chief? Hopefully everything works out in his favor. Always stay positive. Good things will happen. Good luck.

I thought this was the third time--a quick check shows this is number four. He just hit 14 years TIS in March. I am more anxious about Chief than he is--not becuase of the money, but because he is a go to guy that deserves it. He takes the tough assignments and makes a difference at them.

Thanks for the well wishes. I will keep them close. If the results come out the same time frame as last year, we wil lbe getting ready to attend my college grad. All in all it has the potential to be a really eventful weekend!!
