I missed my initiation (15 September 1989) cause I transferred to NAS Glenview. When the List of selectees was out, I checked with ESO. I was told I wasnt on the list. I accepted that and took the exam again the following year. In March, I visited my old command in San Diego, I noticed at the morning formation that an old fellow first class was wearing Khakis. After formation, I was promptly greeted by several shipmates with "How you feel about being Chief". I was so surprised. I then got a copy of the message from PSD. When I returned to my command in Glenview, I went to ESO and showed them the message. After lunch. I returned to work at QA, I was told that the Senior Chief at Training called and asked me to call back. When I called back he promptly said "Where have you been"; told me to report immediately to Training. The Command Master Chief McClusky was there when I went to the office. They schedule me into a CPO Indoc and I went all over the base at NAS Glenview to see the different chiefs for the different subjects in the indoc. At the end of the second day, My CO was pinning my anchors on my collar.
You think the story ends there. I was scheduled into the CPO Initiation (14 September 1990) with the next group of selectees. I automatically became the senior slug. That I found was a very tough job, harder than any job since. I found that I had to rely my fellow selectees.
For the initiation, I was charged with impersonating a first class petty officer from 15 September 1989 to 9 April 1990 and also charged with impersonating a Chief petty officer from 9 April 1990 to 14 September 1990. When I reported to the appointed place of initiation, I was promptly charged with being out of uniform..since I was not a first class could not wear that uniform nor was I to wear Khakis, so i wore blue overalls. Very Rememberable two days as well as all the training at the CPO mess before that. At no point was i allowed to be disgraced while wearing khakis, so i had to change to blue overalls for worm training in the mess.
Uniform I was drug off my Minesweep in a huge diaper with a 15 lb wieght tied to my male things with a short rope which I knew I did not want to drop. Uniform never saw mine till that afternoon when the days events were coming to an end. Huge diaper and that was all Uniform .
